Readers’ Column for the week of Jan. 31, 2016

You may call the Owego Pennysaver Readers’ Column at (607) 687-2378 24-hours a day, or e-mail comments to readerscolumn@stny.rr.com. We reserve the right to revise or reject any message.

I can find a website that says Hillary wants to take your guns. I can also find a website that says the CIA orchestrated the JFK assassination and ones that say the moon landing was faked. And ones that say 9/11 was done by our own government. Research things folks.

What a hoot! Ten years ago today, Al Gore stated that if we didn’t make significant changes in the way we live, life on earth would be over. I’m still here, I assume you are too. Officially, global temps have increased 1 fourth of 1 degree, life appears to go on as normal. And we’re supposed to “buy” their man-made climate change gobble-de-gook? I think not!

~

I wrote the comment suggesting that the superintendent live in the school area that he serves. If he lives here, pays taxes here and has his children educated here, I think he has to have a bigger interest in what is happening in this area. I do not think anyone should fear being able to go out in public with or without his family. If so, what is this world coming to?

It is sad that the politicians can use their campaign dollars for anything they want. When I give money to a politician for his campaign I intend for him/her to use it for that. It should be considered a taking of funds under false pretenses and should be a criminal act just like a ponzi scheme. Of course, the lawyers make the laws and they make them for their own benefit and until we can vote them out it will continue. A law is a law except for all the politicians.

We have been stopping in Owego quite a bit for the last month. We cross the new Bridge, which has lights on both sides. During the Christmas season the bridge was lit up even more. When we leave Owego we cross the east end bridge as we pass McDonalds, and it’s like going into the Twilight Zone – there are no lights anywhere. What is the deal in Owego using up all of their money to light the new bridge? It’s quite dangerous for drivers and people who need to walk in this area. We hope something can be done about this.

~

Just had a look at the new Owego School and I hardly know what to say. What a tremendous waste of taxpayer money. Yes, I know it was FEMA money, but where do you think that FEMA gets its money? Looks more like a luxury hotel or a casino. Now comes the tax hikes to maintain it. Such an extravagant building is ridiculous. For one thing this is not a rich area, and school taxes are way too high as it is. Good grief! The people running this area need to get real.

~

That was very nice tribute to Kenny Wolff in last week’s publication. The Walt who the sender referred to is Walt Pianosi, who was also an excellent Owego Fire Department Chief in the 60’s era. Thanks, Walt.

~

It would be nice if the Pennysaver Press would include the inserts for AC Moore, Michaels and JoAnn Fabrics. As a hobby enthusiast, it would be greatly appreciated. We have nothing in Owego for those of us who have hobbies.

First the colonists came and moved the Indians west. Then the government needed more land for expansion and moved the Indians west. Then the railroads came and moved the Indians west. Finally the U.S. needed more land so they moved the Indians to Florida and the southwest. NOW the gas barons are telling the landowners that we have to have your land one way or another to cut through your timber and soil to put in a gas pipe. What’s next?

~

Keystone Cops in action. Seems that the home of El Chapo, the Mexican drug lord, contained several firearms that originated in the U.S. and “walked” across the border with Mexico courtesy of the operation originated by Eric Holder and good old Barack Hussein Nobama. Part of operation Fast and Furious. Guess maybe they ought to “own” this, but we all know they won’t. Instead they will try to distract by some other gun grabbing nonsense.

“So, if we lie to the government it’s a felony, but if we lie to the public it’s politics” – Bill Murray

I feel very grateful that I lived long enough to see an African-American in the White House. I was anticipating these same feelings in hopes of seeing a woman in the White House, but wouldn’t it be just as awesome to have a Jewish democratic socialist elected President?

~

I have had society finches for years. The female of my two finches died this week. Brewzer, my male needs a home. He looks and cries for her all day. Does anyone have a cage of society finches to give him a home? He is free but needs to be with others. Call 687-5620.

Everyone knows that Donald Trump or Ted Cruz would make vastly superior Commanders in Chief than the hapless and hopeless nobama. However, Hillary would make a great commander and cheat.

~

Will someone please call in and explain to me what Rush Limbaugh means by the term drive by media?

~

I see where the one reader said we should watch 13 Hours and we will all see the real story of Hillary Clinton and the Benghazi cover up. That’s a great movie, I heard it’s a really great movie, but when you get done watching that you should watch Jurassic Park because do they realize there’s dinosaurs coming to Los Angles too on that ship? These people are delusional if they are starting to think movies are real. That’s your typical Republican.

~

I read this column almost every week in this paper. I have to comment on one thing. Overall I think Tioga County must be the most disgruntled county in the whole country. All they do is complain! They complain about the politicians, they complain about the highway departments. This county gets more free stuff than any other county in the country probably and all they do is complain about government. If they don’t like our government why don’t they pack up and leave and go to another country and live because this is pathetic. They’re nothing but a bunch of whiners!

~

The movie 13 Hours is about Benghazi and you know it’s true fact because a Republican said it was.

~

I agree with the astute caller senior citizen about electing a non-career politician. I too could support Cruz, Trump or Rubio, although I am somewhat dubious about lawyer presidents. The three candidates are not perfect but are all infinitely better than Hillary. I could however include one other great president, that is Dwight Eisenhower who used the threat of nuclear weapons to end the Korean War and warned us of the growing power of the military industrial complex. However, he should have included the lame stream media.

In this week’s Pennysaver someone was commenting about the places to shoot pool. What I would like to see in this area would be a boxing gym. That would be a good place to work on my skills. I remember Jeff Sibley had that Hard Knox boxing place but he had to close. I would like to see a boxing gym in this area. I am open to suggestions.

As usual the socialist Democrats are clueless. Tea Party stands for “taxed enough already”. Get it? TEA! Tea Party people do not support the elite former leaders of the Republican Party. Tea Party people hate big government and don’t have their hands out like nobama sycophants. Tea Party people have specific plans for eliminating nobamacare with something financially beneficial to the middle class. Tea Party people do not persecute religion and stand up to the arrogant nobama who has bypassed congress with his insane executive orders supporting open borders and illegal immigration from enemy countries like Syria. Now do you understand what the Tea Party is?

~

I agree with the person who said Tioga Central should close the pool. I have said this for years. We cannot afford to maintain such a luxury. We are the only small school in this county that has one. Money could be spent on actual education instead. I am sure they will try to raise our taxes significantly.

First I’d like to thank the person who called in about having a tankless water heater. I appreciate the info. Actually I haven’t been hearing anything good about tankless water heaters so when the time comes I will go to the original kind. Also, before that I had written about CDPHP increasing our premiums, so last week I went to the Countryside Community Center and talked to Arlene and she said she’s talked to other people mentioning this. I told her it was in the reader’s column where someone called in telling where to go for information. She was very appreciative as am I. She said we could call that number or Jennifer Ford, she is very good and informative with United Healthcare, AARP. Just wanted you to know I said thank you to both readers for the tankless water heater and CDPHP info.

The United States just gave Iran $1.7 billion, yet if individuals in the United States don’t buy health insurance they will have to pay a hefty fine. That money should have been spent on free universal health insurance. All the other big countries have universal health insurance.

~

This is to the person that asked whoever has their female redbone coonhound to please return to 154 Catlin Hill Rd., no questions asked. My comment to that person is to keep your dog tied up in accordance with the New York State law and you won’t have to worry about this – no questions asked.

Think of our earth as one large garage, the earth’s atmosphere is the garage door. Any exhaust inside the garage builds up so you must be okay with sitting inside your vehicle in the garage with the garage door shut and the vehicle running.

~

One quarter of a degree makes a major difference in our climate. Ever hear of splitting an atom? Small changes have large consequences.

~

Where in Tioga County can I donate baby afghans and lap afghans I have crocheted?

~

The Tax Ladies office has closed, so why don’t you try calling Holly Klett at her home to get your tax records.

~

To the reader asking if the Tax Ladies in Owego have gone out of business. They have but I know Watson CPA in the Johnson Pool plaza is accepting new clients for the tax season.

~

I’m calling about the Tioga Center School District and about the swimming pool. I don’t understand how they put it in there. It isn’t big enough for a meet, and half the time you can’t go there to go swimming. They just spend money like it is going out of style. I called over there three years ago to have memorial paintings of classmates who died while we were in school. Apparently they just threw them away like those people didn’t mean anything to them. I just wanted them to know, yes they did. They said supposedly they didn’t have anywhere to hang them. Last time I was in that school there were plenty of bare walls. They just threw them away and I don’t think it’s right.

There is a Binghamton Optical located at 421 East Main St. in Endicott. The phone number is 754-5726.

~

I totally agree with the person who wrote in about the Tioga pool. Get rid of it! Demand that the school board and the administration cut back on spending. Why do we have buses on the road on a Saturday? I think that Mr. Gural when he donated money to the school should have been put on the school board or had a say on what it was spent on. There is more to that school than football. Please, would someone stop the madness of spend, spend, spend and start to bring down the good ole boys club (a.k.a. the school board).

~

Follow the news. The AUMF bill is being fast tracked through congress by Republican establishment politicians Lindsey Graham and Mitch McConnell to give nobama almost unlimited war powers authority and no time limits and to be able to bypass congressional approval for war. The Republican elites are serving emperor nobama much more power right on a silver platter. Vigilance and opposition is needed on this road to totalitarianism. What kind of dirty deal was made to accomplish this?

~

For the person who is looking for a tax preparer in Owego. I highly recommend Watson GPA. I’ve taken my taxes to the owner, Erin Watson, and have always received professional and courteous service. She is great to work with. Watson CPA is located in the Johnson’s Pool plaza on Route 434 in Owego. You can make an appointment by calling Erin at (607) 321-9571.

The Richford Congregational Church on Route 38 in Richford will be holding their soup and salad dinner on Saturday, Feb. 6 and Saturday, March 5. This is a great opportunity to enjoy an evening of a great meal and fellowship and support great causes. The Richford Congregation Church does these not only for their church but also to support the community. Funds from the February and March dinners will be going to support the Helping Hands food pantry that serves the Berkshire and Richford area. Let’s all show support not to our wonderful church that does a lot for the community but to have the full trickle affect that helps our neighbors in need. God bless and take care.
