Keith Slocum, production manager for Our Green Acres in Owego, N.Y. has recently been presented an Excellence in IPM Award from the New York State Integrated Pest Management. This program has been designed to help producers of crops to use less pesticides and to use them effectively.
Slocum’s award was for his cooperation in monitoring pheromone traps for detecting the presence of the moths that lay the eggs that cause the larvae to get into the sweet corn. It is only after the moths are present and detected that the word goes out that growers should take preventative action. The objective is to create a program where growers have the information to utilize a minimum of pesticides.
