Readers’ Column for the week of July 5, 2015

You may call the Owego Pennysaver Readers’ Column at (607) 687-2378 24-hours a day, or e-mail comments to readerscolumn@stny.rr.com. We reserve the right to revise or reject any message.

Interesting facts. At a big conference, both at the U.N. and the Vatican, in which both sides of the global warming and climate change were to be presented by experts, only those in favor of the hoax were allowed. What might they be afraid of? Our government is telling us the unemployment rate is 5.5 percent. There are, according to the Census Bureau, 217 million eligible workers in the age 16 to 68 groups; yet 93 million Americans are out of work. In my book, that works out to more like 42 percent unemployment. Figure it out yourself; just don’t try using the math Common Core advocates.

Today, two-thirds of retirees depend on Social Security for the majority of their income. As employers continue phasing out traditional pensions in favor of a do-it-yourself retirement savings model, it is critical that we fight to protect and expand Social Security – the only guaranteed source of income in retirement. Like Medicare, Social Security is an essential part of a safe and healthy retirement. A strong benefit is needed to support current and future retirees. Call or email President Obama, New York State Senators Gillibrand and Schumer and tell them you demand the expansion of Social Security. Time to respect our elders.

This is to the Village of Owego OPD. I would just like to invite you to come and sit on West Avenue where you can catch people speeding multiple times a day, especially around 5 p.m. when everyone gets out of work. So, OPD please come to West Avenue and slow these people down.

I’d like to remark on the comment about the state police needing more manhunt training. I think that’s really rude. Let that person who commented about that go into the woods and walk and walk for days on end and not have the facilities of being near what they need to do on a daily basis. They are really rude to say something like that. My other comment is about the person in Candor and not parking in front of their home. It doesn’t usually bother anybody. Everyone is having a good time watching the parade and if they don’t want people to be there they can block off where they don’t want them to sit in front of their yard. They should be more considerate too, because if everyone felt that way there would be no one watching the parade. What’s wrong with people anymore? Can’t they be considerate of others?

Regarding the call complaining that people with alcoholic strawberry daiquiris were not allowed off the premises where purchased. First of all, shame on you for not having the guts if you feel like you have a legitimate point to identify yourself by addressing your grievance in a letter to the editor. Second, Strawberry Festival is a family event and as such, this should be taken into serious consideration as it was by our local police force. This is not Bourbon Street on any night in New Orleans. Perhaps there was an issue with your policy last year that caused a problem and that is why the law was enforced this year. No one told you that you could not sell your alcohol, just that it had to be enjoyed on the premises.

I called a few weeks ago which I thought was of the utmost importance but it did not get printed for whatever reason. Again, please do not hold small children on your lap when on a riding lawnmower regardless of whether the blades are engaged or not. They are still there and are still sharp. Grown men have been killed when mowers roll over on them. They are extremely heavy. A small child could be seriously injured, ruining the entire rest of their life just by being run over by a single tire. Do not indulge in this practice! A few seconds of what you perceive as fun is not worth a trip to the hospital or worse.

We need a president who will get tough on Isis and make sure those butchers are brought to justice! That is the kind of president I hope and pray we get in the next election.

To the public, please answer this question – true or false. I just heard that a gas company is planning on drilling a natural gas well in the town of Barton in July.

Everyone should be made aware of check scams. First time ordering checks from a new company at a low price, they send it to another place where they are printed, a place where you may have ordered before and then you get billed as a repeat customer at full price, $82.

Why is the Town of Candor messing with FEMA and the DEC? They have already ruined the scene where the lower dam was and probably put the healthcare center in jeopardy. The upper dam is fine; it might have a few small leaks that a few bags of Ready Mix would fix if we ever have low water again.

The proposed land trust recreation area on Logan Hill in Candor is a farce. A lot of the road is over bedrock and it will be inaccessible to ordinary cars unless the town spends a fortune on the road.

You probably hear a lot about the prison up there and the prison break but you won’t see anything in the paper about the understaffing of guards and maintenance personnel. You can bet your dollar on it.
