Tioga County to become Purple Heart County

Tioga County has always been very proud of her veterans and those that have served in our armed forces. The designation as a Purple Heart County is a way to respect and to honor those who have served and sacrificed for our freedoms that we all enjoy.

The Purple Heat is awarded to members of the military wounded or killed in combat. It’s the U.S. military’s oldest honor.

Senator Tom Libous’ Regional Affairs Coordinator, Don Leonard of Spencer, N.Y. reports his progress to date.

He has a draft resolution ready to submit to the Tioga County Legislature.

He has established contacts with the New York State Purple Heart Society and New York State Department of Transportation and has their agreement to the principle.

Tioga County can make the signs and he will work with them, as well as the Department of Transportation to assure the specs are in sync.

They are now at the point of attempting to secure funding for the signs.

Once this is determined, they will proceed with sign fabrication, the passing of a resolution, and the scheduling of an event within the county.
