We have an emperor, not a king

Dear Editor,

New York is the “Empire State”, so we have an emperor, not a king. New York City is the largest city in the world and so it is inevitable that it dominates its suburbs. But I don’t think that the city should have so much influence on the rest of New York State.

The border between New York and Connecticut consists of 82 land miles and 100 water miles (Long Island Sound) for a total of 182 miles. If the border of Connecticut were to be re-drawn to include New York City, Westchester County and Long Island, then its border with New York would be only 22 land miles and 58 water miles (Hudson River). Only 23 of those water miles would be a new state border. The remaining 35 miles is now the border between New York and New Jersey.

I grew up in Westchester County and remember the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad, so I know that a large part of Connecticut is suburban to New York City. Geographically, it might seem like a natural for the city to join Connecticut but politically I don’t think it would work. In fact I would say “Intolerable” for the small state of Connecticut.

That leaves an alternative, which would be for them to separate from our state and form their own state.

Sincerely,

Karl Tiemann
