Earlier this month, Senator Tom Libous (R-52) announced that through the State and Municipalities Capital Program he was able to secure funds for local upgrades and maintenance. Of those funds, Senator Libous awarded $65,000 to the Town of Owego for a new band shell at Hickories Park in Owego, N.Y.
The former band shell, used for many years for local concerts, many presented by the Tioga Arts Council, was damaged during the flooding of 2011.
“Along with upgrades that address repetitive flood damage issues, the new band shell will allow Hickories Park to continue generating tourism excitement and revenue for the Town of Owego,” said Senator Libous.
He added, “I’m glad to be able to help the Town of Owego by supporting this important upgrade, and I can’t wait to get out and see some of these new, finished projects in Owego and elsewhere.”
Abbey Hendrickson, director of the Tioga Arts Council, was very happy to hear this news.
Hendrickson stated, “From our perspective, replacing the band shell lost in the flood is a meaningful and necessary step towards Tioga County’s continued recovery and growth. Every summer, the Tioga Arts Council collaborates with the Town of Owego to present free concerts to hundreds of residents and visitors to Tioga County, drawing performers from a wildly talented pool of local musicians. Replacement of the band shell in Hickories Park will not only provide more opportunities for area musicians, but it will also help expand people’s appreciation of music, arts and culture. We couldn’t be happier!”
Don Castellucci, Town of Owego supervisor will be joined by others for a press conference at Hickories Park on Thursday at 1:45 to reveal more details regarding the band shell, so be sure to look for more information in this Sunday’s Owego Pennysaver.
