East Stroudsburg University (ESU) sophomore center back Laurel Neira, from Owego, has been named the PSAC Women’s Soccer Athlete of the Week after scoring three goals and anchoring the Warriors’ defense in two PSAC wins last week.

Neira, who attended Owego Free Academy, scored both goals in a 2-1 (OT) win over Bloomsburg last Wednesday, and scored ESU’s second goal in a 4-1 win at Lock Haven on Saturday. All three goals came off corner kicks.

Against Bloomsburg, Neira scored the game’s first goal in the 56th minute, then had the game-winner 6:51 into the first overtime to lift the Warriors to their fifth straight victory. Last Saturday at Lock Haven, Neira headed home a corner in the 37th minute.

Neira has started 22 of ESU’s 25 games since the beginning of the 2013 season. She plays in the middle of a defense that returned three of its four starters from last year. Neira and goalkeeper Brittain Wagner, from Endicott, N.Y. are the only ESU Warriors to be named PSAC Athlete of the Week since the conference moved to a single-division format in 2010.
