Memorial Day Parade planned in Candor

Candor will host a Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 28. Marchers will start at the Legion building on Spencer Avenue at 10 a.m., and continue down Main Street.

When they reach the lower bridge, there will be a ceremony honoring Navy personnel who died in service to our country.

The parade will then continue to the end of Main Street, turn left on Owego Road, and march to Maple Grove Cemetery where there will a ceremony honoring all of the men and women who have died in military service for the United States.

At the cemetery, a POW flat has been installed, and the Candor Chamber of Commerce has also approved landscaping at the memorial to be installed by Tioga Gardens, with funds provided for both through the Memorial fundraising efforts.

Earlier last year, the Chamber, led by member at large Dick Zavatto, began planning for the memorial to be placed at the base of the flagpole in the cemetery. The stones, according to a previous article, are designed to feature six seals for each branch of the armed forces and the Merchant Marines.

According to Dick Zavatto, It is hoped that the memorial will be installed by Memorial Day.
