On Monday, April 2, the Village of Owego Board held their first meeting with their three newly elected members – Mayor Mike Baratta, Charles Plater (2nd Ward), and Fran VanHousen (3rd Ward).

The first order of the meeting included the announcement of appointments, which included Lynn Craig as Acting Village Justice, Diane Gregory as Village Court Clerk, Michael Roberts as Village Historian, and Cindy Motter and Kim Norton as Deputy Clerk Treasurer.

Items discussed included a parade permit, new Fire Department members, updates on the new Department of Public Works building and sewer Phase II, and positions that need to be filled.

One of the public items brought up that seemed of most interest was the status of the Owego Historic Preservation Commission. The concern is that the work had become stagnant since 2016. According to members of the public, as well as the defunct commission, the commission’s abolishment can cause the loss of grants, reimbursements and tourism dollars.

Meetings of the village board are held on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month, at 7 p.m. at the Department of Public Works Building located on Elm Street.
