Black Friday isn’t just for shoppers. Bowlers with time to spare gathered at Owego Bowl on Nov. 24 for Black Friday Bowling, a free event hosted by VFW Post 1371 and the Owego Bowl, along with help from other area veteran organizations.

Owego Bowl, located at 1404 Taylor Rd. in Owego, N.Y., was bustling with bowlers of all ages and abilities – knocking down pins and enjoying refreshments from 1 to 5 p.m.

The first hour was extremely busy, according to VFW Post 1371 member David Bensley, who, along with his family, has helped organize the event for the past 13 years. Bensley took a moment to strategize how much extra pizza sheets should be ordered, in anticipation of more bowlers stopping by to take a turn at Black Friday Bowling.

About 90 minutes into the event, Owego Bowl Owner Rick O’Neil shared, “We’ve had about 110 people so far.”

Previous years have brought some 150 to 200 people through the doors to take a turn on the Owego Bowl’s classic wood lanes with Brunswick machines.

“This event is great for the community, especially the kids,” Bensley said, and further explained that some of the funding comes from other events held throughout the year.

VFW Post 1371 has had a long history of providing youth activities each year as a way to give back to the community, including the popular children’s Christmas Party, this year scheduled for Dec. 10.
