Candor’s Independence Day Celebration has been celebrated for well over 70 years in Candor, N.Y. The American Legion organized it from the parade to the fireworks, carnival and all the events in between for many years.
In the past few years, the Legionnaires have passed along and decided to leave it for the younger generation to handle. A few brave souls stepped up and took over the planning and executing of a great celebration for the community and the committee is now comprised of a mix of community members along with the American Legion Family.
The 2017 celebration starts on June 25 with the Little Mr. & Miss Candor contest at the Pavilion behind the Legion at 4 p.m. The Wheelock rides carnival comes to town on Thursday, June 29 and will be there until the end of the day on Saturday, July 1.
During that time, the concession stand will be open, there will be entertainment throughout the three days, fireworks on Friday, June 30, and a Kiddie Parade (theme is Heroes) and wrist band day on Saturday, July 1.
The Community Chorus performs at the Candor School on Saturday, July 1 at 7 p.m. On Sunday, the NYS Horse Pullers Association will have their teams for a horse pull behind the Legion (gate entry fee) starting at noon. Monday will be a first for the Independence Day Celebration – an Open Car Show, held at the ball field starting at 4 p.m. Food and music will be available and there is no entry fee. Tuesday will end the festivities with a 10 a.m. parade (theme is Heroes) up Main Street, and the ever-famous chicken BBQ to follow at the ballpark.
Throughout the year, the committee holds fundraisers and seeks donations to help pay for marching bands, color guard marching group prize money, float prize money, toilets, garbage removal and other expenses. Countless hours are spent to make sure the celebration of independence is enjoyed by all ages. The committee thanks everyone that helps us in any way.
This year, the parade will feature over 13 floats, marching bands – Purple Lightening, the Candor Central School Band, The Penn York Highlanders, Kirby Band, Grenadier’s Alumni Band, and the Finger Lakes Fife & Drum Corp. There will be several veterans and auxiliary marching groups, as well as the newly crowned Mr. and Miss Candor.
If you have questions, you may call 659-4724 before June 29.
