OLL News Brief

OLL News BriefOwego Little League (OLL) has 24 teams and 292 registered players in six divisions for Opening Day 2016 and the seven week season beginning on Saturday, April 30 and ending Wednesday, June 15, and followed by the Owego Invitational Baseball Tournament.

Player Agent Eric Hawkins is feeling very happy for two reasons. He says on Opening Day 2015 there were 238 registered; this year there are 54 more. Online registration is still the top way to signup. Out of the 292 registrations, 22 were done by paper.

Team breakdown by Division: Tee Ball for ages five to six has six. Modified (Machine Pitch) for ages six to eight has six. Baseball Minors or American for ages eight to 11 has five. Baseball Majors for ages ten to 12 has three. Softball Majors or National for girls ten to 12 has three. Softball Minor or American has one.

Teener VP Jim Lavo reminds players that sign ups are still being accepted on the OLL website, www.eteamz.com/Owego. Lavo expects to have at least four teams for this summer – two 14U and two 16U. That means 40-plus players.

Also, the Teener League is testing interest in an 18U team, comprised of 17 and 18 year olds. If you are interested in playing on the 18U team and are 17 or 18, call or email Jim Lavo at 953-9751 or lavojim@gmail.com.

Within the OLL Family, league officials say it’s time to do succession planning for important volunteer leadership positions. That’s engaging and developing the organization by identifying your talent and ensuring that your talent is ready for these key volunteer roles.

What’s your area of volunteer interest? Look at the OLL Board and Staff Page on the OLL website, www.eteamz.com/owego.

Consider being a “shadow” so you can be introduced to the environment, expectations and requirements of the volunteer opportunity. You’ll spend one-on-one time with the volunteer observing activities and asking questions. Your goal: What do I want to learn as an “OLL Shadow?” Be specific.

An OLL volunteer writer wants to do a history of Owego Girls Softball going way back before and during its affiliation with OLL. If there are records, they are tucked away someplace, or lost in the September 2011 flood. Whatever information and reflections you can provide will “jump start” the process.

Still looking for a researcher / writer to do the last 15 years of OLL Baseball and TeeBall.

Families with eligible baseball and softball players are considering moving into the area. They say they’ll check out Little Leagues in Owego, Apalachin, Vestal, Endwell, Nichols and Waverly.

How would you best explain what makes OLL special? It’ll be used in a phone conversation, email, Facebook post or message, or on Twitter. OLL would appreciate the benefit of your thinking. Email your material to Jim Raftis at jraftis2@stny.rr.com.
