The Hiawatha Hammerheads captured the Under-11 championship at the annual Central New York Thanksgiving Soccer Tournament at Central New York Family Sports Centre in Baldwinsville last Friday. The Hammerheads were unbeaten in four pool-play matches versus challengers from the Syracuse and Utica areas and then defeated Coliseum Soccer Club of Utica by the score of 7 to 0 in the championship game to win the tournament title.

Paced by the stellar play of goalkeeper Addison Young, the Hiawatha Hammerheads did not allow an opposition goal in any game during the tournament. Hiawatha coaches awarded the “MOTM Player of the Tournament” hat to defender Darren Starkweather for his outstanding performance throughout the tournament and midfielder Jacob Banks earned the “Move of the Tournament” hat for some deft dribbling to create a goal in the match versus Syracuse Fusion.

The Hammerheads team is part of the Hiawatha Soccer Association of Owego and includes players from Apalachin, Candor, Owego and Lansing. The team is coached by Bob Tiddick and Jim Franz.
