Local Sierra Club to host ‘Democracy and the Environment’ book discussion and environmental writers group

The Sierra Club will offer two events in August that are free and open to the public. The first is the August installment of the book discussion group with the theme “Democracy and the Environment.”

This month the group will discuss Slow Violence and the Environmentalism of the Poor by Dr. Rob Nixon. This book examines the “slow” violence wrought by climate change, toxic drift, deforestation, oil spills, and the environmental aftermath of war takes place gradually and often invisibly. Nixon focuses on the inattention paid to the lethal consequences of many environmental crises, in contrast with the sensational, spectacle-driven messaging that impels public activism today.

There are two opportunities to participate in this discussion group. The first is on Wednesday, Aug. 26 at 7:30 p.m. via a conference call with a Q&A discussion with the author. To get information about how to participate, RSVP at newyork.sierraclub.org. A local discussion will also take place on Thursday, Aug. 27, at 7 p.m. at CyberCafe West, 176 Main St., Binghamton. This will take place after the Environmental Writers Group meeting.

The Environmental Writers Group meets monthly to share drafts for submission to local media and to advocate for accurate representation of environmental issues and connect them with other social issues that face our community. The Group will meet on Thursday, Aug. 27 at 6 p.m., also at CyberCafe West.
