Donholt, Heath win NYS Championships at Champion Speedway

OWEGO — Track conditions were excellent for RD 2 of the Danny Moonbeam Fallon New York State Championship on Aug. 22 at Champion Speedway and produced some great racing.

Coming into the finals, the points leader was Spencer Portararo with Caleb Stewart in second and Casey Donholt third. Stewart started off with a heat win over Donholt. Fast Albert Smith from Maine was impressive early on in the heats, also winning over both Donholt and Portararo. 

Donholt started to rebound in the semis when he won his semifinal over Stewart while Smith and Portararo were the transfers to the Main in the other one. 

Young 15-year-old phenom, Cody “The Kid” Pierce, of Spencer, was last off the line in the last chance qualifier but put an amazing run in around the outside to pass everyone, by the end, just getting leader Levi “Hornet” Harris on the last set of corners for the victory and last position in the feature.

Donholt got gate one in the draw for the Scratch Main which suited his strong gating skills and he did not waste that advantage making the jump ahead of Stewart. The two would follow each other closely for four laps and finish one and two which left them tied for the overall championship on 22 points each. The track had stated the tie breaker would be the second round main event finished so the nod went to Donholt and he took home the title of NYS Champion.

In the D-2 wars, the cagey Owego veteran, and crowd favorite, Alex “The Hazard” Heath came up against a youngster who is getting very good, Kabriel Howard, but used his many years of experience to fend off the kid and take the State Championship Div 2 Title.

There was some great racing in the ATV division as well. Don Tonkin, who has won multiple main events this season, gated strongly and held off a valiant effort from Joey Brizzee to clinch the Championship. Damin Titus was third and Dante Masciarelli was fourth.

The U.S. Open National Championships come to town next with RD 1 at Action Park East in Greene on Sept 5 at 7 p.m. and the Championship Finals at Champion Speedway, Sept. 6 at 6 p.m. World class riders will be on the card taking the challenge from the next the East Coast has to offer.
