Sideways Spencer takes state Championship Round 1 at speedway

OWEGO — Spencer Portararo took a week off from racing to celebrate the birth of his new son, Theo, and came back with a vengeance, winning every heat and the feature in the Danny Moonbeam Fallon NYS Championship Round 1 at Champion Speedway on Aug. 15.

Portararo on his Harman Boyz Racing, Paul Bieganski sponsored GM started on the pole in the Main with Levi Harris next to him, Caleb Stewart in 3, Adam Mittl in four and Casey Donholt on the outside.
Portararo made the initial start with Stewart in second on the heavy dirt line. Stewart caught traction and straightened a bit and moved out a line. Donholt was just behind Stewart and slid out into the wall. The referee deemed Stewart the cause of the stoppage and put him on the penalty line for the re-start. On the second attempt Portararo again made the start and rode 4 solid laps for the checkered flag and a perfect night! Donholt would hold second for most of the race but Stewart was on a mission and making up ground quickly from the back. At the line, in an exciting finish for the spectators, he got by Donholt for a hard-earned 2nd. Donholt would end up 3rd with Harris 4th and Mittl 5th.

Round 2 and the final of the State Championship will conclude August 22nd at Champion and then The U.S. Open National Championships Finals take place Sept. 6 at Champion!
Local Owego legend, Alex “The Hazard” Heath, made a calculated, but daring, pass on Kabriel Howard on the last corner of the D-2 Main Event to take a popular with the crowd victory!
