On March 4, the archery team from North Spencer Christian Academy (NCSA) traveled to Utica New York to participate in the New York State National Archery in Schools Program (NASP) Statewide Archery Tournament. The seven NSCA students, Shawn Roman, Jamie Card, Hannah Forrest, Roy Miller, Pavel Jofré, Aaron Cody and Abiliene Lockwood, competed with over 500 students from around the state, who represented 23 different schools. This is the third year that students at NSCA have participated in the NASP but the first time attending the state tournament.
When all of the results were tabulated, Pavel Jofré scored fourth in New York State in the category of Elementary School Boys, earning an invitation to the National NASP Tournament in Louisville, Ky. planned for May 12-14. The National Tournament will host 10-13,000 students nationwide who will compete for score and scholarships. Expected dollar amounts will be $20,000 for top male and female, $15,000 for 2nd male and female, $10,000 for 3rd male and female, $5,000 for 4th male and female, and $2,500 for 5th place male and female.
The National Archery in the Schools Program is a cooperative effort between state conservation departments, school systems and private organizations to help engage young citizens in outdoor activities and participate in the enduring sport of archery. The program promotes student education, physical education, and lifelong participation in archery. Since its inception in March 2002, more than four million students at over 8,500 schools located in 47 states and five countries have participated in NASP. New York was the 44th state to implement the program and school participation continues to grow each year. Currently, 238 schools in New York State participate as part of their Physical Education programs.
New York’s NASP is dedicated to providing quality instruction, information, and support for implementation of archery in physical education curriculums for grades four through 12. Safety and a positive atmosphere for students are emphasized. The program helps build muscle, endurance, and flexibility, and helps develop hand-eye-coordination, grip, and body strength. Archery is a non-discriminatory sport and can be taught through this program to almost any student of nearly any age or skill level. Educators report that NASP “engages the unengaged” and inspires students to greater achievement in school.
