Fourth and fifth grade students and their families from the Apalachin Elementary School recently donated $7,500 to the American Heart Association.

Throughout the month of February, students learned about their heart, the importance of exercising, nutrition, and being a contributing citizen. Their culminating activity is the annual Jump Rope For Heart event the American Heart Association organizes.

This event started at Apalachin Elementary School in 1992. Since then, the Apalachin community comes together to be a huge contributor for the American Heart Association.

For the event, fourth and fifth grade students jump rope in a team of six for 90 minutes. The fourth and fifth graders show off various jump rope tricks and perform lots of heart healthy jumping. A few of the students even jumped longer than Mr. Silvestri and Mrs. VanHouten in their “jump off” competitions.

They would like to thank Tom Donovan for being their DJ for the day. They would also like to thank the parent volunteers, Mrs. Bennett and Mrs. Mead for volunteering their time to help out with all of the paperwork involved.

Top competitors this year were as follows:

Mrs. Barnes’ class was the leading contributor this year with a class total of $3,068. This is a new class record.

In the fifth grade, top competitors were Sami Baker, Jordan Greeno, Michael Marble, Camden Johnson, Jack Munson, Victoria Fissler, Cole Dalton, Maddie Bennett, Evan Short, Billy Virgilio, Daleanna Prosinski and Ariel Higley.

In the fourth grade class, top competitors were Aaron Klett, Caleb Hoover, Connor Curtis, Dominick Curley, Samantha Pedro, Zoey Schneider, Zach Hammond, Elijah Bailey and Brett Ackerman.

As a reminder, the 5th annual AES Mile Fun Run is tentatively scheduled for May 5. More information is forthcoming.
