Readers’ Column for the week of March 6, 2016

You may call the Owego Pennysaver Readers’ Column at (607) 687-2378 24-hours a day, or e-mail comments to readerscolumn@stny.rr.com. We reserve the right to revise or reject any message.

The thought crossed my mind that the reason the Republican establishment in Washington is ganging up on Donald Trump is because come election day many of those millionaires will be out in the cold and the three major parties will elect enough honest people to bring our wonderful country and the commoners back to the quality of life that we all deserve.

Bill Clinton knowingly violated the Massachusetts election law on Super Tuesday when he entered a polling place in Boston and schmoozed with voters and election officials. Campaigns are not allowed to solicit votes within 150 feet of a polling place. Clinton also visited other polling sites, and voters were kept waiting for long periods because of his presence. All of this is on video. From previous experience, we all know Bill Clinton is a cheater. Just ask Hillary. Obviously, crashing polling sites on primary day is not beneath the dignity of the former president. The Clintons will do anything to win.

According to Webster, eminent domain is the right of a ‘government’ to take private property for public use. I do not consider a big gas conglomerate to be the government and I and I do not believe that putting a pipeline on a 100 foot swath thru a homeowner’s property anywhere he likes and therefore cutting a man’s property in two and depriving him of his livelihood as being honest. It is too bad that this poor couple is not getting more support from the common man so this crap does not continue to happen.

I do wish that my neighbors would please pack their recyclables more securely, especially because of the high winds we get. The gallon milk jugs should be crushed so they do not end up on Ruth Street.

~

In response to last week’s column, a person should buy term life insurance, not whole life. This is according to Suzie Orman.

Most of the people who will vote for Donald Trump to “shake things up in Washington” will also vote to reelect their incumbent congressman and senator. Don’t they realize that the real power rests in the hands of these clowns? The most powerful man in the country is not the President, but the Speaker of the House. A President who is not willing to “suck up” to Congress is doomed.

~

To the party who wrote into last week’s Pennysaver doubting Hillary’s guilt. It’s not what one wishes for or hopes and prays for, it’s what is true! Question: If you or I did any of the things Hillary or Barack Obama have done, would we not be in jail by now? If we owed the government $4 million in back taxes as does Al Sharpton, wouldn’t the IRS have us behind bars? Why the double standard? Hillary broke the law, period! What’s the consequence?

~

Really, I just want to say, if Donald Trump wins everyone in the country is screwed! I will vote communist before I even consider voting Trump OR Hillary!

~

Hillary has always lived from the public trough. She never had a real job and never had to make a company payroll. She gets free health insurance, free dental and free optical. Her lifetime retirement is paid. This is all at the expense of the taxpayer. She thinks government creates jobs, but has little experience or knowledge about how the economy really works. For four more years of economy stagnation or worse, go ahead and vote for her. Finally, through Hillary’s support of the abortion, she’s made her own “war on women”, wiping out over one quarter of the work force of the next generation alone. The bigger percentage of abortions are female.

~

To the party who wrote last week wishing for equality of OUTCOME, offering many excuses for not achieving. For your information, we’ve been without money, with a little money, with a little more money, to bankrupt, to a comfortable lifestyle. Common denominator? WORK! We noticed that the more time and effort we put in, the “luckier” we got. Try it – you might like it instead of the blame game and excuse making.

The arrogance of power has been the downfall of many politicians. Shielding themselves with complicit staff, they sometimes go too far – Watergate, Bridgegate, etc. Hillary Clinton is under investigation for using a private email server for government business. The Justice Department recently granted immunity to the Clinton staffer who set up the server. The Justice Department and the FBI are trying to determine whether a crime was committed. This is just another example of poor judgment on the part of Clinton. Like her husband, who violated the Massachusetts election law on Super Tuesday when he entered a polling place in Boston, Hillary Clinton dwells in a bubble of arrogance and narcissism.

The Trump election steamroller reflects the fact that people know that the Republican congress means no good for them with their constant threats to cut social security, cut food stamps and entitlements. The Republicans in congress have no interest whatsoever in their American constituents.

~

Newsbreak. Have you thanked your Republican representatives in congress for anything lately?

~

I’d like to know why they don’t take the red light in Newark Valley and change it to a pressure pad for side streets. A lot of times I come up through there when the light turns red, there’s not traffic on either side, I know you are supposed to obey the law but I think it’s kind of ridiculous you have to stop when there is nobody on the sides.

~

I have a question and I don’t know whom it would go to. When the old Owego bridge was there, there used to be a water level gauge that went by feet on one of the bridge abutment concrete things on the bridge. With the new bridge they didn’t put that in and I was wondering why they didn’t.

Follow the news. The Republican Party is keeping intact its record of being the party of NO. The only thing they want to say yes to is cuts in social security, cuts in health care, particularly for women, cuts for entitlement programs such as aides, education, food stamps, you name it. The Republican Party is the party of NO, no business as usual, no governing and most of all no common sense.

Why can’t we pick and choose the TV channels we get? I’m sure the technology exists. I’d like it ale carte, like an 8 channel package, 12 channel package, you pick. If they can give you certain programs with pay per view they can give you your choice of channels. I have basic channels and many times there are five simultaneous basketball or soccer games on. Who needs that? That’s nuts! Give me a choice, I’m paying big bucks for it. How about a choice?

For the person trying to find cat and dog stay away, Agway would have it in stock.

~

Does it make sense to anybody that the post office is losing so much money they want to discontinue delivering mail another day of the week and they are going to cut the price of postage. That probably only makes sense to the politicians.

~

I’m looking for anyone interested in old and large motorcycle trophies. Answer in the column with your phone number. Also, where can you take old used flashlight batteries, all sizes?

~

Cheaper stamps simply means that taxpayers will have to pay more of the post office deficit. Why don’t they just make stamps free and pay the whole thing out of tax money.

~

I have a scanner at home and often there are calls for emergencies. They cancelled different things for Owego in the village and call for Campville, even though it appears the address of the emergency is closer. Are they separated as far as village with the fire and emergency crew versus the town so that Campville will take something just because it’s outside of the village limits like 5th Avenue and then cancel the Owego Village crews even though they might be closer?

~

If you want to hear the Republicans cry, turn on Fox. They said they are crying. Rubio is a young guy and doesn’t know enough to run our country. As far as the Republican Party they say they will support Trump. Well, know they are trying to dump him. They are doing everything and this is not fair in politics. As far as I’m concerned the Republican Party is a bunch of losers and then they sit there and cry about it.

~

So Donald Trump will not disavow the Ku Klux Klan. The last time we had a president who would not disavow them was Woodrow Wilson.

~

Click, click, click, this just in, the political reporter, got a new machine, click, click, click, this just in from Trump headquarters, if Trump is elected he will name Sean Penn as Director of the DEA, this just in, thank you very much, thank you, click, click, click.

If you caught them stealing, lying, and selling your valuables, controlling your medications, alienating you from friends and family – whether you are in your 20’s or 60’s – get he heck out of this relationship! Either run or roll away in your wheelchair, just get away from the abuser that is slowly killing you. I would send you a letter but you aren’t allowed to see the mail. This is the best I can do.

~

According to the Freedom of Information Act, emails received by judicial law, Hillary’s staff had to clarify messages for her as she was very often confused. The smartest woman confused? Perhaps the bump on her head did more damage than we will ever know.

~

I would love to talk to the genius that set up the timing on all these traffic lights in Owego. With all these sensors and cameras on all these corners, you would think they would have smart lights. If there’s no traffic coming one way or another there’s no sense waiting forever at this intersection. Get with the program Owego!

In 1982 my family relocated from out of state to Owego, New York. We were surprised when our tax bill tripled from what we were used to paying, especially when both homes were very equivalent in size and age. We just moved from out of state and that’s the way things are in New York. Now 34 years later my taxes have gone from approximately $1,800 to $12,000 which includes a $500 increase we had this year. The largest increase was several years ago when a town wide assessment was done, which we fought and won like a lot of other property owners did. Our increases ended up being around $900 that year. The reason for me to call into the Pennysaver is to make the younger residents aware of what the future could bring. Imagine 30 years from now what our children and grandchildren could have to look forward to if the taxes continue to rise. My home could be $30,000 plus in 30 years if people who we have elected to run our town, village and schools do not take control and put a stop to these increases. With people living longer than ever, how do we expect our elderly population to survive here? My income is a lot less these days due to my retirement but my home expenses have increased. My mortgage payments and taxes were less than what just my taxes are now. This is the future we have for our children.

~

A lot of people working in small businesses today get to only work 28 to 32 hours a week. This way the business does not have to pay the insurance plus a lot of these jobs are minimum wage, not a lot of good jobs out there. How many people believe the unemployment rate is under 5 percent? Yeah right.

~

Many of us are ticked at congress for not doing what they said they’d do when campaigning, so we like what Trump says. But he is a chameleon and will say whatever is best for the moment. Trump calls everyone a liar to throw everyone off track but when you call Dr. Ben Carson a pedophile, that’s just going too low. My vote goes elsewhere, your vote should too.

Respect for a person or a group is earned, it’s not legislated.

What happened to the white pedestal sink that was lying on the ground in front of 64 Whig St., Newark Valley. It was not free. I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt, the stuff on the right was free but the stuff on the left had prices on them. Please bring it back or leave $30 in the mailbox in the coffee can. I will chalk this up to an honest mistake and I will leave it at that. Thank you for the honesty for bringing the sink back, I paid $80 for that sink and only used it for a short period of time and had my bathroom remodeled. It is definitely worth $30.

Are you aware that Donald Trump is the number one person who has filed for the most business bankruptcies? A successful phony?
