The library needs your vote

Dear Editor,

I am encouraging the community to vote for library funding in the Owego Apalachin School District Budget on May 19.

Why do people support their local library? Is it nostalgia for their own library experiences when they were younger? Is it general support for education? Is it that they rely on the services that their local library provides?

We sometimes hear that libraries are a useless endeavor with internet and cell phones. There’s no need for a library anymore. Kids learn to read in school, and that’s really the parent’s responsibility anyways. And with eBooks and kindles, nobody reads books anymore, so there is just no reason to even have a library.

But consider that the Apalachin Library provides access to books, computers and internet access to those who don’t have it, DVDs, children and adult programs, homework help, a free library card, a community gathering space, printing, and resources from 33 libraries within the Finger Lakes Library System.

The Apalachin Library is a vital, essential member of the community.

Please vote YES on May 19. You can vote at the Apalachin Elementary School or Owego Middle School from noon to 8 p.m. Absentee ballots are available from Marcy Hill by calling 687-6215.

Sincerely,

Janet Thomas

President, Friends of the Apalachin Library
