OLL News Brief

Owego Little League (OLL) Player Agent Eric Hawkins says online Sign Ups continue to roll along at a steady pace. Cut off for the online Sign Ups is Sunday, March 15. The sooner parents register their players the better. Baseball Officers need to determine how many teams and coaches are needed.

Sign Ups at the Tioga County Boys and Girls Club were very successful. There were more in person Sign Ups on those two nights than last year over two nights and a Saturday.

Last chance to Sign Up in person for OLL Baseball and Tee Ball, Owego Girls Softball and Teener League Baseball is from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

There will be a mandatory coaches meeting at 7 p.m. for all returning and new coaches.

VP Baseball Chris Rieg says Owego Free Academy Head Baseball Coach Phil Schofield and his staff in their baseball program from modified to varsity and with his varsity baseball players taught philosophies and fundamentals to OLL and Apalachin Little League players Saturday at OFA and OAMS.

VP Teener League Jim Lavo says focus was on throwing fundamentals (infield, outfield, pitchers and catchers), fielding fundamentals and hitting fundamentals. Kids who signed up got to every station and learned all positions, this is a big step for these kids to learn important skills of the game and prepare for the next level of baseball.

VP Softball Dave York says the Owego Girls Softball players ages seven through 12 have completed six clinics on Feb. 2, 5, 9, 12, 19 and 26 to prepare for the 2015 season.

On Saturday, March 21, an indoor clinic precedes the annual Player Drafts.

Sign Up for a task. Prepare the fields when your child’s team is assigned. Make sure your child attends practices and games on time. Make sure your child has arrangements for getting home safely after practices and games.

Come to games whenever possible and volunteer to help the manager and team parent.

Set an example by demonstrating good spectator sportsmanship at games by cheering for your child’s team, and encourage all players; not criticizing or “razzing” the opposing team – this is forbidden; and not criticizing an umpire’s call, this is unproductive and sets a bad example for the players. If you are knowledgeable enough about baseball to criticize the umpire, please sign up to become an umpire.

Volunteers are essential for OLL to have a program for the boys and girls that love to play baseball and softball. There are several ways that you can help in support of OLL. Here are a few areas that OLL can use help with throughout the year.

Coaches, Managers, Concessions, Registration, Field Preparation and Clean Up, Team Parent, Scorekeeper and Play National Anthem and Little League Pledge on PA System. All volunteers must complete the Little League Volunteer Application.
