Dear Editor, I am writing to demonstrate my enthusiastic support for the renovation and addition to station one on Pennsylvania Avenue in Apalachin. It is obvious from the information sent home by the Department that the Board of Fire Commissioners has done an excellent job of providing a design that will provide a functional building at a responsible cost to the taxpayer. No one wants to pay more taxes, but everyone wants the very best facilities for the Fire Department. Back in 1952 when the present building was constructed it is safe to assume that people did not want to increase their taxes then either. Who would want to? However it was necessary then and it is necessary today. The reason is one simple word: Safety. It is necessary for the safety of the volunteers and for the safety of the community. The present building does not provide sufficient space for the requirements of 2010. Yes there is a cost and it is one that every member of the Fire Department as well as each member of the Board of fire Commissioners must bear as well as all residents of the Fire District. This is what a community does in order to help each other to protect our property and to provide emergency medical services. When the call goes out to the volunteers they respond no matter the weather or time of day. Many times a birthday or thanksgiving dinner goes waiting as the volunteer answers the call. I know because my husband is a volunteer. He loves it and would never give it up. I worry every time he goes out the door. I want him and all the volunteers to have the equipment and the facilities they need so they can provide emergency services to all the rest of us in as safe a manner as possible. Please vote yes on March 16 at station one between noon and 9 p.m. Sincerely, Rosemary T. Conning Apalachin, N.Y.
