Volunteers needed to advocate for Residents in Long Term Care Facilities throughout Tioga County

The Chemung-Schuyler-Tioga Regional Long Term Care Ombudsman Program is recruiting volunteers to serve as trained and certified ombudsman in long term facilities in Tioga County. Ombudsman help to insure that residents who reside in local licensed family – type homes for adults, adult homes, assisted living programs, and nursing homes receive the quality of care and life guaranteed to them by law. Some areas an ombudsman may assist with include resident’s right and care, medical concerns, administrative policies, food service issues, personal, financial and legal concerns.

Volunteers must be at least 21 – years of age and complete the 36-hour certification-training program that will take place in May. Volunteers should have personal qualities such as resourcefulness, tact, good communication and problem solving skills. Upon successful completion of the certification-training program, volunteers will be assigned to a facility of their choice in Tioga County. The ombudsman is asked to visit his or her facility at least once a week, and may vary the times and days of week that they visit. The advocacy program is confidential and is of no cost to residents or their facility.
