Volunteers need to be kept safe

Dear Editor,

I am writing to support the Apalachin Fire Department’s (AFD) plans to renovate and expand Station 1. The 1952 building was adequate for the firefighters and equipment of its time, but an expansion is needed to accommodate modern firefighting equipment and to make the bays safe for the volunteers who are rushing to board vehicles in response to a call.

During my time in Apalachin, the AFD and its volunteers have been good neighbors to the community. As the pastor of Park Terrace Community UMC, I know how difficult it is to find and retain quality volunteers. We have the opportunity to support them by voting for the funding they need to provide us with prompt, efficient, modern, and safe emergency services. It will also provide an energy efficient, low maintenance facility – showing good stewardship of future resources.

Sincerely,

Rev. Nick Keeney
