The 9th grade class at S-VE successfully completed the first ever "It’s All Greek to Me" project. Students were asked to research a given topic on Greece or Rome and formulate an in-depth project board and physical representation to present to other students and community members. For this project, students used multiple and varied resources including cookbooks, almanacs, databases, textbooks, biographies, the internet, and professional presentation boards in order to produce quality end products. These products were proudly presented at the Greek and Roman Presentation Night on Jan. 26, and in classes from Jan. 27 to Feb. 2.

Students were originally given a packet of instructions for gathering information about their Greek or Roman topic from various sources. Topic choices included engineering wonders, significant people, the coliseum, gladiators, aqueducts, baths, Pompeii, wars, weapons, housing, gender roles, and clothing to name a few. Students then used almanacs, cookbooks, computers, historical resources, and interviews to discover as much as they could about their given topic. After getting poster sized presentation boards, students collected, organized, and analyzed their information to display on these boards as well as making sure of accuracy of authenticity and documentation. Students then described and illustrated the various aspects of Greece or Rome in order to persuade Mr. Dove, Mrs. Alpert, Ms. Peters, classmates, parents, and community members that their presentations were well researched and presented.

These final presentations took place at the "It’s All Greek to Me" project night for all parents, students, teachers, and community members. Over 300 people attended the grand event, including the 85 students who were presenting. These presentations consisted of cited information included on a newspaper article, a creative song, a flag depiction, a compared to today section, an effect on today section, ten questions for further research section, and a physical illustration of the topic. The backgrounds of the presentation boards were intricately decorated with glitter, colored paper, paint, and colorful pictures. Students also dressed up, had music playing, created handouts and Microsoft Powerpoints, created movies, created models, and had a variety of foods from Greek and Roman times available for tasting. Those people brave enough to sample food found it to be most pleasing. A live explosion of Mt. Vesuvius even occurred.

The 9th grade students and teachers involved really appreciate the attendance of parents, administrators, board members, teachers, community members, and students. From the feedback received of the evening presentations, the students effectively displayed what happened. Special thanks to Sally Marx, Barb Bailey, Bill Deats, and Allison Farmer as well as all the parents for helping our students achieve success. "It’s All Greek to Me" was a refreshing, educational experience that these 9th graders will not soon forget!
