A cancer diagnosis is scary, life changing and…a reason to grab at least 10 of your friends and family and stay up all night celebrating! The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Tioga County invites community members to an open house to learn how to honor and celebrate the lives of cancer survivors within their community. The open-house event will take place on March 11 from noon – 6 p.m. at the Pumpelly House Estates in Owego, NY.

Join anytime between the hours of noon and six for light refreshments, tea and coffee. Information will be available on how to get involved in the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life. You can volunteer, start a team, sign up as a cancer survivor for our activities that includes a celebration dinner or serve on the planning committee.

Local survivor Debbie Noe has felt help and hope from Relay For Life. She has been participating in Tioga County’s Relay For Life for years, but now as a survivor is even more thankful what the American Cancer Society gives to those in need.

"Everyone in the community needs to be supporting the American Cancer Society and Relay For Life. They help a wide spread of people in the world and right here in our community. It is so important that people get involved," Noe said.

The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life is an overnight community celebration where individuals and teams camp out, dance, and take turns walking or running around a track. At nightfall, hundreds of luminaries will shine around the track in a moving ceremony to honor cancer survivors, as well as friends and family members lost to the disease. Relay For Life helps raise funds for the American Cancer Society’s life-saving programs through research, advocacy, education and patient and family services.

"Relay For Life is a great opportunity for communities to come together and find the 25th hour in the day and use it to fight cancer," said Denise Woods, American Cancer Society Director of Special Events in Tioga County. "It provides us with a way to celebrate the cancer survivors in this community, remember those lost to the disease and fight back through advocacy initiatives, education about personal risk and just coming together in the belief that cancer will be one day be eliminated."

Funds raised through Relay For Life support the mission of the American Cancer Society to save lives by helping people stay well, by helping people get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back. Funds support patient service programs such as Look Good…Feel Better (LGFB). LGFB is a free one-time service offered by the American Cancer Society that teaches female cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatments beauty techniques and gives them wigs to help enhance their appearance and self-image. LGFB is one of the many programs offered by the American Cancer Society in which the proceeds raised by Relay For Life help support.
