Dear Editor, Over the past 17 years I have had the opportunity to work with several Mayors and Village Boards. Some good and others not so impressive. Our current Village Mayor, Ed Arrington, has proven his outstanding capability to run our village. He has shown over and over again his dedication and loyalty to both village employees and residents. He holds himself accountable, as well as all village departments for fiscal responsibility. His vision for the village is GROWTH. He has succeeded. The Coolest Small Town in America campaign was a fun experience. This project had the Mayor's support at the onset. This project has made our small village BIG in every sense of the word. Ultimately, this made Owego a popular name for hundreds of miles away. He has pursued new businesses, new jobs, is continually working to increase the village tax base, has put properties back on the tax rolls, and has removed dangerous eyesores within the village. This has not been a priority with previous administrations. Prior to the Riverwalk construction the Riverbank stabilization project was a necessity. The question of the day... FLOODING. This project has proven its value. It accomplished what it was built to do. The water did come up, but the riverbank held. This is a positive addition for the Village of Owego. The Riverwalk will be enjoyed for many years . This project could have fallen by the wayside, but the Mayor saw the potential for increased business and tourism in Owego. His successful attempts to acquire the necessary funding have been unending. Mayor Arrington aggressively seeks out State and Federal grants. Community Development Block Grants have accomplished extensive housing upgrades for village residents. He recommended that the Village establish an emergency grant fund for residents needing assistance in home repairs, as well as an emergency fund for fire victims to assist them in their needs. Mayor Arrington has worked with and supported a local business owner for new construction of the Owego Biotech Center. A definite plus for Owego, bringing in new industry and jobs. In his attempt to accomplish all of these things, he has had only one agenda - "A Better Owego" for everyone. On another note, I just read a letter to the editor in the Tioga County Courier questioning my ethics and professionalism. I would like to clarify lies and misinformation. First, there is no secret about the paper ballots. It has been discussed at several public board meetings begining in October of 2009. It has also been published in the local papers. Secretive? Second, as for employees carrying petitions, my husband being on a Vacancy committee, and my having a political sign in my yard. Last I knew the 1st amendment allowed us freedom of speech to do this. I find it amusing and a little disturbing that someone with no ethics at all would even question mine. Sincerely, Lynne A. Mieczkowski Village of Owego Clerk Treasurer
