Final registration for Owego Little League’s 2010 season is Tuesday, Feb. 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Owego Central Fire Station, 87 North Ave. Player Agent Karen Vinti emphasizes the important responsibility of parents to register their players and volunteer for the 59th season.

Assisted by volunteers, VP-Baseball Debi Schmidt signs up those for Tee Ball Ages 5-6, Little League Baseball Modified-Machine Pitch Ages 6-8, American Ages 8-10 and National Ages 10-12. VP-Softball Mark Warfle handles Girls Softball American Ages 8-10 and National Ages 10-12. Teener Baseball Ages 13-16 are registered by Mark Felice and Craig Bergmann.

League officials use the registration information in the weeks ahead for multiple purposes: to plan teams, prepare for player drafts, coaching clinics and indoor and outdoor player clinics. Data also goes to Uniform Manager Lori Espe, Equipment Manager Dan Martin, Umpire in Chief-Baseball Jim Medovich and Game Scheduler Rich Ives.

Equally important is for parents to sign up for volunteer opportunities. You may indicate your willingness to be a volunteer coordinator, league secretary, manager, coach, umpire, scorekeeper, play national anthem, work bee day, building and grounds, concession stand, 50-50 etc.

Coaching Players and Guiding Players in Youth Sports is the theme of a first time youth coaching certification class for all OLL managers and coaches on Feb. 27 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Owego Elementary School gymnasium.

OLL President Ken Winters says this is a comprehensive, one-time curriculum delivered in easy to understand modules by the SUNY Youth Sports Institute.

Here’s what the managers and coaches will learn: Sports Psychology; Why Children Play: Why They Quit; Character Education and How to Teach It’; Youth Sport in American Culture; Reducing Risk;. and Organization and Communication Toolbox.

Certified SUNY Youth Sports Instructor Gary Vail is a retired Windsor Athletic Director and Basketball Coach and says among the benefits of certification is communication with expert coaches, learning how to plan your practice and season, a comprehensive coaching curriculum and parent instruction.
