As March is National Nutrition Month it is the perfect time to begin your path to better health! Are you having trouble knowing where to begin? Start from the ground up! Try these tips to make your smart food choices last all year long. Remember, set small goals each week to create a strong foundation and to ensure long lasting healthy habits!

Home cooking: Leave the pre-packaged meals at the grocery store. Try cooking one of your favorite meals. When cooking at home we often don’t add as much salt and fat that is found in pre-packaged meals. Get your kids involved and have fun!

Eat fruits and veggies: Add a serving, whether frozen, dried, canned or fresh, each day to one meal and add another serving every few weeks. Remember to drain and throw away the liquid from canned fruits and vegetables.

A whole grain: Don’t lose out on healthy minerals, vitamins and fiber. Try whole wheat bread, brown rice, popcorn, rolled oats, barley, etc.

Look locally: From farmer’s markets to advertised local produce in your grocery store, there are many options to find new foods. It is a great way to eat well and support your local community!

Test your taste buds: Expand your horizons. Try a vegetable you’ve never eaten before or find a new bean salad recipe. By testing yourself, you might find new healthy favorites to add to your regular grocery list.

Healthy treats: A healthful diet doesn’t mean going hungry. If you have a sweet tooth, have fruit and yogurt for dessert. If you want a snack in the afternoon, try some trail mix, dried fruit or nuts.

You are a role model: Trying to get your kids to eat healthy? Be a role model. Kids will follow your lead.

Lastly, don’t forget to read the nutrition facts labels to help you make good food choices.

Remember, healthy habits begin at home
