Lourdes is offering a training program for people interested in working as volunteers with Lourdes Hospice. Volunteers play a vital role in the Hospice program at Lourdes by providing care and support for terminally ill patients, their families and friends. If you possess respect and reverence for life, a positive outlook, sensitivity, compassion, empathy, flexibility, a sense of humor and the willingness to help others, then our Hospice patients need you! A weekend training session will be held on Saturdays and Sundays beginning March 13 and ending March 21 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. All sessions will be held at the McAuley Building (the blue building) behind St. Patrick’s Church, 300 Main St., Owego. A number of topics are covered during the training including the history and philosophy of Hospice Care, Death-Grief-Losses, communication skills and psychological issues. After completing the training and requirements, volunteers have the opportunity to assist in a number of areas including home care, delivery and errands, meals, bereavement, nursing homes, inpatient, office duties and much more. Anyone interested in learning more about becoming a Hospice Volunteer, can contact Bettye Canestaro, Hospice Volunteer Coordinator, at 584-9159.
