New Beginnings Salon welcomed nail technicians from around the area to their Owego salon on Feb. 27 to share their common interest in nails, and to learn more about the latest products. According to Salon Owner Tommilynn Rando, attendees came from as far as Syracuse, Scranton, Athens, Johnson City, Owego and areas in between. Educators came from as far a Ontario, Poconos, Rochester, New Jersey and NYC.

In this area, according to Rando, the nail technicians have very few classes to further our education and learn of new products, and have to rely mostly on the internet, magazines or driving far distances to get to a class. Rando further explained that in the beauty industry, like many other industries, if you want to stay on top you have to learn the latest.

"The big thing these days are bling or rock star toes, and rock star nails and gel nails are also very popular and on the rise - even though they have been around for along time," said Rando.

The salon’s guests on Feb. 27 had a lot of fun learning new decorating techniques for both the gels and acrylics. Another new technique they learned was dry pedicures. Rando was also pleased to announce that in spite of the declining economy, the hair and nail industry will always remain because women like that little extra treat and it makes them feel good.
