APALACHIN, N.Y. -- On March 16, the residents in the Apalachin Fire District voted against renovating and expanding Station One.

According to reports, the vote came in at 500 for, and 542 against the proposal, with seven votes remaining to be counted as of Wednesday, March 17.

The renovation would have tacked an additional $77 to the fire tax bill for area homeowners.

The renovation and expansion, according to fire district officials, would have brought the station on Pennsylvania Avenue in Apalachin up to safety and building codes, and would have accommodated the size of the new fire equipment.

The station, which was build in 1952, was last renovated in 1976.
