Fire Department President explains need for new station

Dear Editor,

On March 16, residents of the Apalachin Fire District will have the opportunity to vote on a proposed bond to fund a $4.5 million renovation/expansion of Station 1 on Pennsylvania Ave. To be sure, this structure has served us well for nearly 60 years. But in recent times we’ve experienced a steady surge in the number of callouts, as well as requirements to meet upgraded safety standards and building codes. For example, State and Federal mandates have improved firefighter safety on our fire engines by enclosing the cabs where firefighters sit. As a result of this and other safety improvements, the trucks have increased in size.

Station 1 is not long enough or wide enough to safely accommodate these larger trucks. In addition, the low ceiling height in the ambulance bay limits our ability to install a proper diesel fume exhaust capture system. When engines are started, firefighters/EMS personnel must deal with exhaust fumes that linger. These are just two of many building and safety issues that will be rectified by the project which has been carefully designed to be functional…without being elaborate.

Fortunately, when Station 1 was constructed back in 1952, it was built well. As a result, that portion of the current structure will be renovated, not torn down. Additional spaces will allow us to enhance our training programs, house all of our vehicles indoors, and add a bunk area to allow responders to remain on call overnight at the station, resulting in even faster response times.

To better acquaint residents of the Fire District with the project, a Public Hearing will be held on Thursday, March 4, at 7 p.m. in Station 1 located on Pennsylvania Avenue. At that time, residents will receive more detailed information about the proposed project and have an opportunity to ask questions, offer comments, and tour the facility.

As officers of the Department, we realize that the timing of this proposal is less than ideal. But at the same time, we have an obligation to meet the growing need for emergency services and to provide a safe working environment for our volunteers. Our people work hard to maintain your trust and we are honored to serve you. And while it can be said that you depend on us, we are very mindful that we also depend on you!

Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Mary Ann Cascarino

President, Apalachin Fire Department
