The Apalachin Fire District Board of Fire Commissioners has scheduled a bond referendum on the renovation and addition to Station One for Tuesday, March 16 from noon to 9 p.m. The referendum will be held at Station One, 230 Pennsylvania Ave. in Apalachin. All registered voters who reside in the Apalachin Fire District are eligible to vote.

The Board of Fire Commissioners has been working for the past ten years to develop a plan for renovating Station One on Pennsylvania Avenue. The original structure was built in 1952 and was renovated in 1976. Areas of need that would be addressed in the renovation and addition include: enlarging the apparatus bays to accommodate the size of the newer fire equipment; increasing the number of bays to house the nine vehicles required at this location; bring the building in compliance with today’s safety and building codes as well as the Americans with Disabilities Act [ADA]; create office, training, bunk, and meeting space for the volunteers as well as an ADA compliant community meeting space; and the project will modernize the building’s energy use.

According to a release received, the renovations will create a modern facility that meets the needs of the Fire District by addressing safety, space and maintenance, while planning for future usage.

The release continued that the renovated station will be an energy efficient, low maintenance building that will fit into the neighborhood. They noted that materials will be selected to insure that the building will be in good condition more than 50 years from now.
