As the Owego Fire Department continued to recover and rebuild from the flood damage to their buildings and equipment as a result of Typical Storm Lee, they received some financial help from Lockheed Martin Owego. On Tuesday, Jan. 17, Owego Fire Chief Ed Franz met with Lockheed Martin’s Vice President and Owego Site General Manager Dan Spoor to receive a check for $4,000 to assist in the rebuild efforts. Also present was Lockheed Martin Owego’s Communications Manager Jeff Brown, Lockheed Martin Owego’s Emergency Services Coordinator and Local Volunteer Rob Brady, as well as Owego Fire Department Past Assistant Chief and Incident Safety Officer Dave Churchman.
Chief Franz stated that the donation was greatly appreciated and would be put toward the new Training Facility Building Fund.
The Owego Fire Department is currently engaged in a fundraising campaign to complete the interior of the new Training Building located off McMaster Street in the Village that was not affected by the flood. This building will house the fire department’s kitchen and training classroom facilities that were lost in the flood. The kitchen and classrooms were previously located in the basement of the Central Fire Station on North Avenue.
The basement of Central Station can no longer be used for any purpose due to the recurring flood damage from 2005, 2006 and 2011. The current estimate of equipment, building damage and losses to the Owego Fire Department due to the September Flooding is estimated at $1 million.
