{"id":97927,"date":"2023-09-24T11:09:43","date_gmt":"2023-09-24T15:09:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.owegopennysaver.com\/PS\/?p=97927"},"modified":"2023-09-24T11:09:43","modified_gmt":"2023-09-24T15:09:43","slug":"a-pastors-thoughts-jesus-prayerbook","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.owegopennysaver.com\/PS\/2023\/09\/24\/a-pastors-thoughts-jesus-prayerbook\/","title":{"rendered":"A Pastor\u2019s Thoughts: Jesus\u2019 Prayerbook"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">For thousands of years, people have found there is a wonderful book that has served as a guide to prayer and for giving all human emotions to God.&nbsp;Jesus quoted from this book and did so even as he was dying on the cross (see Mark 15:34 and Psalm 22:1). The book is the Psalms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">You can find the Psalms printed along with the rest of the Bible or as a stand-alone book. There is a wonderful website that includes many different translations, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.biblegateway.com.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I like the Contemporary English Version (CEV) that was done by the ecumenical American Bible Society.&nbsp;The version was originally done at a second&nbsp;grade reading level to help children and families read the Bible together.&nbsp;It grew to be very popular with adults.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Common English Bible (CEB) is another recent translation done by biblical scholars from diverse backgrounds.&nbsp;The Message by Eugene Peterson is a wonderful paraphrase in everyday American English; on www.biblegateway.com you can listen to an audio version of it.&nbsp;Check out these different translations to see, with the help of the Holy Spirit, how the Bible speaks to you today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">One of my favorite Psalms is 121, which I remember as I look at the hills that surround our Owego community.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In the CEV, the Psalm comes with the heading, \u201cThe&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;Will Protect His People\u201d:<b> <\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b><sup>1&nbsp;<\/sup><\/b>I look to the hills!<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Where will I find help?<br \/>\n<b><sup>2&nbsp;<\/sup><\/b>It will come from the&nbsp;Lord,<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;who created heaven and earth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b><sup>3&nbsp;<\/sup><\/b>The&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;is your protector,<br \/>\nand he won&#8217;t go to sleep<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;or let you stumble.<br \/>\n<b><sup>4&nbsp;<\/sup><\/b>The protector of Israel<br \/>\ndoesn&#8217;t doze<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;or ever get drowsy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b><sup>5&nbsp;<\/sup><\/b>The&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;is your protector,<br \/>\nthere at your right side<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;to shade you from the sun.<br \/>\n<b><sup>6&nbsp;<\/sup><\/b>You won&#8217;t be harmed<br \/>\nby the sun during the day<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;or by the moon at night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b><sup>7&nbsp;<\/sup><\/b>The&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;will protect you<br \/>\nand keep you safe<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;from all dangers.<br \/>\n<b><sup>8&nbsp;<\/sup><\/b>The&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;will protect you<br \/>\nnow and always<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;wherever you go.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As you face challenges, try praying the Psalms:&nbsp;&nbsp;Anxiety \/ Worry: Psalm 25;&nbsp;Confusion:&nbsp;Psalm 37; Depression: Psalm 16; Psalm 130; Disappointment: Psalm 55; Discouragement: Psalms 42, 43, 62; Doubt:&nbsp;Psalm 8; Psalm 146; Fear:&nbsp;Psalm 27; Psalm 46; Loneliness:&nbsp;Psalm 22; Rejection:&nbsp;Psalm 38; Sadness: Psalm 34; Addiction \/ Substance Abuse:&nbsp;Psalm 40.1-5, 11-17; Psalm 116.1-7; Death of a Loved One:&nbsp;Psalm 23; Illness:&nbsp;Psalms 41, 91.&nbsp;Many more scriptural helps (beyond the Psalms) for both challenging and good times can be found in the American Bible Society\u2019s \u201cBible Reference Guide:&nbsp;Finding Help in Scripture\u201d &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/bibleresources.americanbible.org\/resource\/finding-help-in-the-bible\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/bibleresources.americanbible.org\/resource\/finding-help-in-the-bible<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">You are invited to one of two Wednesday evening prayer services, 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., on zoom hosted by First Presbyterian Union Church where we pray several psalms each week.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">(Bruce Gillette is the Parish Associate Pastor at the First Presbyterian Union Church in Owego with Carolyn Winfrey Gillette [his wife] serving as the Designated Pastor.)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For thousands of years, people have found there is a wonderful book that has served as a guide to prayer and for giving all human&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":5,"featured_media":95664,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"ngg_post_thumbnail":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-97927","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-editorial"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.2 -
