Local musician Andy Fagan\u2019s newest album, \u201cLove\u2019s The Only Thing,\u201d is all about love \u2013 romantic love, loving one\u2019s self, love between parents and siblings, and love of life in general.<\/p>\n

With its distribution on a variety of digital platforms starting this week, he\u2019s especially looking forward to hear what Olivia Newton-John thinks of the new album.<\/p>\n

Fagan, a big fan of Newton-John, proposed to his husband in front of her several years back and has become acquainted with her publicist over the years.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was going to share it (the album) with Olivia, so I\u2019m anxious to hear what Olivia will say,\u201d Fagan said.<\/p>\n

\u201cLove\u2019s The Only Thing,\u201d a mostly acoustic album, is dedicated to Fagan\u2019s father Fred who passed away in October 2018. It\u2019s a collection of songs he\u2019s written over the past 40 years that was recorded during the pandemic, with proper protocols, at the Electric Wilburland Studio in Newfield.<\/p>\n

Some of the songs feature backup vocals from his daughter Erin, who he began performing with before the start of the pandemic. Most recently, they performed together at Arts4All.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt really makes it special and enjoyable,\u201d Fagan said about performing with his daughter.<\/p>\n

Two of the songs feature piano from New York City performer Todd Alsup.<\/p>\n

One of these songs, \u201cSafe Harbor,\u201d was written after Fagan was moved by a woman who spoke about being a victim of child sexual abuse in Elmira. The other, \u201cRoulette Wheel,\u201d was inspired by the pandemic and what everyone has been going through.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter I started recording the album I got COVID, and then I had a heart attack in February, so this song has a lot of meaning for me,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Two of the songs, \u201cGood Father\u201d and \u201cSmile (Through Thick \u2019n Thin)\u201d were written for his father, who had supported his singing while growing up and working on a farm in Perth, N.Y. <\/p>\n

Fagan, who served for many years as the Director of Cornell Cooperative Extension in Owego, said he began writing songs at the age of 14 through a love of listening to the radio. However, while working on the farm, he couldn\u2019t have radio next to him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had trouble remembering the words of the songs so I just started making up my own,\u201d he said. \u201cI always say my first and probably best audience were the calves and heifers because they were tied up and couldn\u2019t get away. Luckily, the heifer barn was away from the other barn. I felt safe enough to sing and, thankfully, my dad was supportive. He never made fun of my singing. My siblings did, but my dad never did.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fagan began working on his first album following the flood of 2011. <\/p>\n

\u201cI wrote the title track to what ended up being my first album, \u2018Rising,\u2019 with Mark Thurston at his home studio in Greenes Landing. Then I continued on and that became an album, and then I continued on and that became my second album.\u201d<\/p>\n

That first album was released in 2013 and his second came out in 2015.<\/p>\n

Fagan largely classifies his third album as contemporary folk or Americana, but said it fits in with country, soft rock, and easy listening as well. <\/p>\n

\u201cAnd even my husband will question, \u2018Is this a Christian album,\u2019 because in a few songs I mention God,\u201d said Fagan. \u201cIt\u2019s really meant to be easy listening, positive, with songs about life. It\u2019s really a throwback to the 70s, and I think it\u2019s something we really need more of. I had a friend Eileen listen to a number of the songs and she said, \u2018Andy, your songs give people hope and that\u2019s what people need to hear.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Fagan is currently booking performances to support the album, and said he has at least two more albums worth of material he hopes to record in the future.<\/p>\n
