Smith Brothers Insurance, in conjunction with Kids for Kids NY, Inc. presented a donation on Nov. 10 to the Tioga County Boys & Girls Club (TCBGC), located at 201 Erie St. in Owego, N.Y.<\/p>\n

Attending the presentation were Michael Constantine, Smith Brothers Insurance New York Regional Leader; Chris Evans, OA Schools Teacher and Coach; Steve May, TCBGC Board Chair; Ken Henson, TCBGC Director of Operations; Robert Clark, TCBGC Board member; and Lee Sibley, brother of longtime Tioga County coach, Charlie Sibley, along with his wife and daughter.<\/p>\n

The donation, in the amount of $2,500, honors the memory of Charlie Sibley who passed away in August and was a coach and mentor to many in the community. Constantine explained that Charlie Sibley\u2019s legacy resonates with the company since a part of their mission highlights helping young people.<\/p>\n

Constantine noted, \u201cIt is great timing to support the community, and particularly in the midst of a pandemic, while also remembering a man who meant a lot to me and was a conduit to reaching kids.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGrowing up, my whole world was basketball, and I was lucky to play for Coach Sibley and my father starting at about age seven or eight,\u201d Constantine shared, adding, \u201cCoach Sibley left behind a legacy, and we will pass that legacy on.\u201d <\/p>\n

Constantine explained that Sibley helped build a travel basketball program during a time in the 1990\u2019s when they were not as common as today, and the trophy-winning teams traveled all throughout New York State.<\/p>\n

A game-defining moment for Constantine occurred when his father pulled him aside and said, \u201cI just played against him (Charlie) in the men\u2019s league and he scored 32 points, so listen to what he\u2019s talking about.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chris Evans, who first met Sibley at age seven or eight, wrote in a previous article published in The Owego Pennysaver, \u201cCharlie Sibley\u2019s death has impacted a great many people, and a coach\u2019s impact can last many lifetimes,\u201d adding, \u201cBut Charlie wasn\u2019t only a coach teaching the finer points of basketball, he was a man wrapped in the gentle passion of selflessly giving the most precious commodity we can give \u2013 our time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Charlie Sibley passed away on Aug. 24, 2020 at the age of 69. He coached throughout Tioga County for more than 50 years. <\/p>\n

It was Sibley, Henson said, who was a constant fixture <\/i><\/b>at the club and contributed in making the TCBGC flourish. Sibley\u2019s coaching style, as Henson witnessed, was more, \u201cThanking parents for giving him the opportunity to coach their kids.\u201d      <\/p>\n

Henson remarked, \u201cWe (TCBGC) are trying to keep the doors open, so the donation is huge and the club appreciates it,\u201d and added, \u201c\u201cWe plan to have an annual tournament in Charlie\u2019s name once the COVID situation allows, and will also present a plaque in his memory.\u201d<\/p>\n
