\u201cWe should be defending the police, not defunding them,\u201d said New York\u2019s Republican Chairman, Nick Langsworthy, to a crowd that gathered in Vestal, N.Y. last Tuesday to show their support to law enforcement. <\/p>\n

Back the Blue, #backtheblue, is a unified effort to raise awareness of the need for law enforcement, and even more so as police departments are being defunded in areas around the nation and while protests in the wake of George Floyd\u2019s death, oftentimes violent, continue.<\/p>\n

One week earlier, and on Aug. 11, several dozen gathered at the Broome County Courthouse to show their support to law enforcement, but were met by counter-protesters three times the crowd size. For the gathering at the Vestal Police Department last Tuesday, however, there were no counter-protesters arriving, and dozens showed up to offer their support to the men and women in blue.<\/p>\n

Matt and Gilda Ward, from Chenango County, stated that they are republicans, and want to support bringing back law and order. <\/p>\n

Chairman Langsworthy opened up Tuesday\u2019s event by stating, \u201cOur feet stand firmly on the thin blue line, and we support them. We are here today to declare, we back the blue.\u201d<\/p>\n

Joining him for the gathering in Vestal were local dignitaries, as well as Congressional Candidate Claudia Tenney, who carries the endorsement of law enforcement into the upcoming election.<\/p>\n

Recognizing the events that led up to the recent violence in the nation, Tinney stated, \u201cNo one likes a bad police officer more than a good police officer does.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chairman Langsworthy agreed with Tinney, adding, \u201c[The police] don\u2019t deserve the hate and disrespect they are being shown.\u201d<\/p>\n

Langsworthy also talked about the governor\u2019s bail reform laws, and called them hurtful.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe year 2020 is the year that we\u2019re going to make changes,\u201d Langsworthy stated.<\/p>\n

Also in attendance was Assemblyman Christopher Friend, who remains vocal about the botched bail initiative, calling it ineffective.<\/p>\n

\u201cGovernor Cuomo isn\u2019t doing the men and women in blue any service,\u201d said Assemblyman Friend.<\/p>\n

Assembly Candidate Joe Angelino also spoke, offering a reminder that evil exists in this world.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe military and law enforcement are the only thing standing between you and evil,\u201d said Angelino, adding, \u201cand crime has doubled.\u201d<\/p>\n

Angelino was speaking about the governor\u2019s bail reform laws and the violence that has erupted with the protesting taking place locally, and nationally.<\/p>\n

In 2019, New York overhauled its bail law, limiting the number of crimes for which judges could set bail \u2013 mostly just those to be deemed violent felonies.<\/p>\n

Because of this, many in attendance last Tuesday, like Angelino, agreed that the bail law has led to repeat offenders.<\/p>\n

In Owego, N.Y., over the last month, several crimes that were reported by the Owego Police Department were committed by the same individual, although days apart. <\/p>\n

Between bail reform and defunding, police officers are having a difficult time trying to do their job, which is to ensure law and order.<\/p>\n

Kathi Bailey, from Chenango Forks, was at Tuesday\u2019s gathering to continue showing her support. Bailey takes care of the fallen officers, and helped Owego during the October 2019 Memorial service and plaque unveiling for its fallen officers.<\/p>\n

More vocal at the gathering, however, was Senator Fred Akshar (R-52), who stated that the lawlessness is coming out of Albany and New York City.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo those running,\u201d said Akshar, regarding the upcoming election, \u201cyou either support the men and women of law enforcement or not.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI unapologetically support the men and women in blue,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Others in attendance on Tuesday included Broome County Sheriff David Harder, Tioga County Sheriff Gary Howard, Vestal\u2019s Police Chief, Owego Town Supervisor and Tioga County\u2019s Republican Chairman Don Castellucci, as well as several Republican elected and local officials.  <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
