Last Monday, a parade of cars circled through Tioga Central School\u2019s main loop to salute and recognize their teachers. The show of support comes just days after the governor\u2019s announcement to close New York State schools for the remainder of the academic year, and also fell during \u201cTeacher Appreciation Week.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is our community, showing some appreciation,\u201d said Josh Roe, Tioga Central High School\u2019s principal, as the cars continued around the loop in front of the high school\u2019s main entrance; many decorated and some carrying signs.<\/p>\n

\u201cTioga Strong,\u201d Tiger Pride,\u201d and \u201cWe Love You\u201d were a mix of the signs displayed. Others had balloons tied to them; there were even a couple of tractors in the mix.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe cars have been going like this for about twenty-one minutes now,\u201d Roe added. <\/p>\n

Literally dozens of teachers and support staff lined the front of the school and along the loop and on the steps, at a social distance. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe got our permit last week,\u201d said Roe, adding, \u201cThis is especially good for our seniors.\u201d He also noted that Michelle Bombard, elementary school principal was the \u201cbrain child\u201d of the idea, an idea that drew together the community.<\/p>\n

Roe also called it a sad occasion, as eight [teachers and staff members] are retiring. <\/p>\n

\u201cFor them, this would have been their last three months after thirty years,\u201d exclaimed Roe, adding, \u201cToday was a way to say that we love them. They\u2019ve been incredible and worked so hard.\u201d<\/p>\n

Retiring teachers are Lynda Lynch, Judy Taylor, Kim Pesesky, Doug Daino, and Julie and Karl Coddington; as well as Melanie Burke, secretary, and Sue Walkley, monitor. <\/p>\n

The Tioga Central School District represents Tioga, Barton, and Nichols. The district has approximately 1,000 students and an average annual 4-year graduation rate above 95 percent. <\/p>\n
