Provided photo.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The minutes of the Cemetery Commission, which can be viewed in the Tioga County Historical Society Museum in two volumes, first mention the construction of a chapel and receiving the vault for Evergreen Cemetery on Tuesday evening, Dec. 31, 1918, when $2,000 dollars was requested for general maintenance and for building a new vault and chapel in the year 1919.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"http:\/\/www.greenstreetdata.com\/PS\/owego\/files\/2019\/10\/Chapel2-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"When was the Evergreen Mortuary Chapel built?\" class=\"wp-image-75644\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.greenstreetdata.com\/PS\/owego\/files\/2019\/10\/Chapel2-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.greenstreetdata.com\/PS\/owego\/files\/2019\/10\/Chapel2-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.greenstreetdata.com\/PS\/owego\/files\/2019\/10\/Chapel2-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.greenstreetdata.com\/PS\/owego\/files\/2019\/10\/Chapel2.jpg 1632w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Receiving Vault on the North side of the Mortuary Chapel. Provided photo.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>On Feb. 8, 1919, a special meeting of the Commission was called to authorize the purchase, for $100 received from Isabell and Jane Bailey, a 100-foot strip of land to be used as a site for the Chapel and Vault. A special meeting was also called on March 10, 1919 \u201cfor the purpose of letting the contract for building a chapel and vault just West of the old receiving vault on land purchased from Jane and Isabell Bailey.\u201d The receiving vault was necessary to contain the remains of individuals who could not be buried when the cemetery was inaccessible, especially during the winter months.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Samuel Randall, representing Randall Bros., came to the meeting with plans to build a brick veneer structure (brick to be determined by the Commission) measuring 16\u2019 x 24\u2019 with a concrete vault (15\u2019 x 20\u2019) attached to the North side of the chapel and a 10\u2019 wide concrete apron extending to the street.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"444\" src=\"http:\/\/www.greenstreetdata.com\/PS\/owego\/files\/2019\/10\/Chapel3-1024x444.jpg\" alt=\"When was the Evergreen Mortuary Chapel built?\" class=\"wp-image-75645\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.greenstreetdata.com\/PS\/owego\/files\/2019\/10\/Chapel3-1024x444.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.greenstreetdata.com\/PS\/owego\/files\/2019\/10\/Chapel3-300x130.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.greenstreetdata.com\/PS\/owego\/files\/2019\/10\/Chapel3-768x333.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Cemetery Commission Minutes from February 1919, page 97, Randall Bros. bid to build Chapel and Vault. The construction lumber was to be drawn from lumber stacked and sawn in the cemetery. The Commission would be responsible for the site prep. The total cost for the building was not to exceed $3,200 and the completion date was set at Nov. 1, 1919.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In February of 1920, the Randall Brothers were paid $1,500 for work on the receiving vault. The Commission was billed $114.90 for the windows.
