Owego-Apalachin Schools will be holding a district-wide art show, \u201cCreative Journeys,\u201d on Tuesday, June 4. The community is invited to browse the multi-faceted exhibit, which will feature pieces from Pre-K through twelfth grades. The event is scheduled from 5 to 7:30 p.m. in the Owego-Apalachin Middle School (OAMS) gymnasium. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The art show will be available for viewing prior to the spring choral concert scheduled at 7:30 p.m. on the same evening. In addition, the art show will remain open to the public through June 6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCreative Journeys\u201d is a theme decided upon by all of the K-12 art teachers within the district, and each of who has had their own creative journey. Art displayed at the show will showcase the most outstanding pieces completed by students during the entire school year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

George VanHouten, a 21-year educator at Apalachin Elementary School, remarked, \u201cStudents start taking art in Pre-K, and then all of the way through their high school years,\u201d adding, \u201cThat is what this show is representing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

VanHouten added, \u201cWe also liked the name Creative Journeys because it sums up the creative journey our students take when going through the process of making a project, as well as their entire educational journey.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

OFA art teacher, Sue Camin, commented, \u201cWe have one of the best jobs because we get to share what we love to do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Camin remarked that the high school offers 11 periods of art and in a variety of media for students, and added, \u201dThe greatest joy is when we have our upper level students make art class a priority in their schedules, and in their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

VanHouten explained that the District Administration has been very supportive of the arts. Camin added that when the art teachers suggested having a K-12 art show, it was met with excitement and anticipation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Principals from their respective schools will award the \u201cPrincipal\u2019s Medal Awards,\u201d which will include a gift certificate for art supplies. All elementary students will receive a participation ribbon, and middle and high school students will be judged by two past art teachers. The OA Schools Superintendent will choose a piece of art for the 2019 \u201cSuperintendent\u2019s Award.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From oil pastels, pottery, 2D and 3D art, drawings, computerized art and photography, a variety of art categories will be represented. At the high school level, students utilize an art lab where they experiment with Photo Shop and digital art, and a new art class is in development for next school year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
