Thanks to a new grant, historical researchers will soon be able to access Candor Free Library\u2019s newspaper archive online. That means no more scrolling through rolls of microfilm! <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Recently, the South Central Regional Library Council (SCRLC) awarded a $5,005 Technology and Digitization Grant to the Candor Library to cover costs of digitizing town and county newspapers currently archived on 34 rolls of microfilm. That translates into about 32,300 pages from newspapers including the Candor Courier (1899-1966), the Owego Gazette (1966-1967), and the Tioga County Courier Gazette (1967-1970).\u00a0

The scanning will be outsourced to the Northern New York Library Network (NNYLN). Once put into digital format, the newspapers will be added to New York State Historic Newspapers and made freely available to the public at their website\u00a0nyshistoricnewspapers.org. There, users can search for names, places, and dates.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
SCRLC\u2019s Technology and Digitization Grants are funded as part of the Regional Bibliographic Data Bases and Interlibrary Resources Sharing Program.

The South Central Regional Library Council is one of nine Library Councils comprising the Empire State Library Network. In addition to Tioga County, SCRLC serves 78 members in Allegany, Broome, Cayuga, Chemung, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Otsego, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Tompkins, and Yates counties.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
SCRLC provides services to 20 academic libraries, 17 hospitals, six public libraries, library systems and their members, six school library systems and their members, 11 special libraries and 18 affiliate members. SCRLC reaches over 500 libraries in its service area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
