On Saturday, June 10 at 1 p.m., there will be a dedication ceremony in memory of a 2000 OFA graduate, Nicole Mathewson, at Hickories Park at the site of the Little Free Library (near the park office). <\/p>\n
Nicole was a teacher in Pennsylvania who was killed in her own home in 2014. She was a community member with a big heart for her students, church and those around her. <\/p>\n
The Little Free Library at Hickories Park will be established in her memory. Owego does not have a registered Little Free Library, so this will be the first.<\/p>\n
Organizers felt there is no better way to continue to honor Nicole in her hometown, while bringing the joy of reading and a sharing a great book to the traveling community of Hickories Park and the surrounding community of Owego and Apalachin. <\/p>\n
Tessa Pozzi-Morgan will be the steward of the library, and will maintain it and ensure there are plenty of books for all ages. The post for the library is currently in place, and the library will be set on the site over the weekend.<\/p>\n
Little Free Library is a nonprofit organization that inspires a love of reading, builds community, and sparks creativity by fostering neighborhood book exchanges around the world.<\/p>\n
The organization helps people start and maintain free \u201ctake a book, return a book\u201d book exchanges called Little Free Libraries. Most Little Free Libraries are placed in front yards, parks, gardens, and easily accessible locations. The Libraries are built to withstand weather of all kinds and hold 20-100 books. <\/p>\n
Nicole Mathewson is the daughter of Mark and Tina (Rector) Mathewson and the sister of Karen (Mathewson) Signs. She was a graduate of Owego Free Academy\u2019s High School Class of 2000. She attended Eastern University and Eastern Mennonite University to pursue a career in education. <\/p>\n
She was a devoted sixth grade math teacher at Brownstown Elementary School in the Conestoga Valley School District. She was a member of Community Fellowship Church in Lancaster, Pa. She was a standing member of the worship team and a Sunday school teacher. Prior to attending college in Pennsylvania, Nicole was a member of the Lounsberry United Methodist Church.<\/p>\n
