The challenges and emotions that come with care giving for an individual with Alzheimer\u2019s disease or other form of dementia can be overwhelming. It can be a stressful endeavor surrounded by anxiety, worry and guilt, and many feel as if they are alone in their journey.<\/p>\n
The Alzheimer\u2019s Association, Central New York Chapter welcomes caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer\u2019s disease or other dementia, as well as individuals with early-stage Alzheimer\u2019s disease, to attend one of its support groups meeting throughout the region in March and April.<\/p>\n
Support groups are a community of peers that exist to support one another. These peer- or professionally-led groups are for individuals, caregivers, and others dealing with Alzheimer\u2019s disease or a related form of dementia. <\/p>\n
Caregiver support groups promote an open forum of sharing and discussion among people facing many of the same issues. The group\u2019s power rests within its members\u2019 ability to show compassion, develop strategies and empower its members to provide the highest quality care possible. <\/p>\n
Early-stage groups provide peer-to-peer conversation and support for individuals specifically diagnosed in the disease\u2019s early stages. Groups are open to the individual with the disease and the caregiver, and advanced screening is recommended prior to attending by calling the number listed with the support group. <\/p>\n
The Chapter has also partnered with the Spanish Action League in Syracuse, or La Liga de Acci\u00f3n Hispa\u00f1a, to provide a support group for Spanish-speaking caregivers. The group will meet at the Spanish Action League\u2019s Syracuse office, 700 Oswego St., on the first Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m.<\/p>\n
An Early Stage Support Group is offered at the Vestal United Methodist Church, located at 328 Main St. in Vestal, on April 14 and May 12 at 1 p.m. <\/p>\n
A Caregiver Support Group is being offered at the First Presbyterian Church of Johnson City, located at 2 Main St., on April 3 and 17 and May 1 and 15 at 7 p.m. A group will also meet at the Vestal Public Library, located at 320 Vestal Parkway East, on April 4 and May 2 at 5:30 p.m. <\/p>\n
In Tioga County, a Caregiver Support Group is being held at Tioga Opportunities, located at 9 Sheldon Guile Blvd. in Owego, on March 11 and April 9 at 1:30 p.m. <\/p>\n
