Fourth and fifth grade students at Apalachin Elementary School recently, along with their families, raised $8,030 for the American Heart Association during their \u201cJump Rope for Heart\u201d event. <\/p>\n

Throughout the month of February, students learn about their heart, the importance of exercising, nutrition, and about being a contributing citizen. Their culminating activity is the annual \u201cJump<\/p>\n

Rope for Heart\u201d event the American Heart Association organizes. The Apalachin Elementary School began holding this event in 1992.  <\/p>\n

During the recent event, fourth and fifth grade students did jump roping in teams of six for 90 minutes. The students showed off various jump rope tricks and did a lot of heart healthy jumping.  A few of the students even jumped longer than Mrs. VanHouten and their own parents in the \u201cjump off\u201d competitions.   <\/p>\n

The students and staff would like to thank Tom Donovan for being their DJ for the day. They would also like to thank their parent volunteers; Mrs. Springsteen, Mrs. Herceg, and Mrs. Sunderland for volunteering their time to help out with all of the paperwork involved. <\/p>\n

Mrs. Kmetz\u2018s class was the leading contributing class this year with a class total of $2,167. <\/p>\n

Participating, in fifth grade, were Aaron Klett, Haley Stephens, Kathryn Donnelly-Taylor, Smantha Pedro, Smantha Ward, Elijah Bailey, Emma Cooper, Connor Curtis and Dominick Curley.<\/p>\n
