The New York State Council on the Arts along with the Preservation League of New York State awarded a Preserve New York grant of $5,000 to the Village of Owego.<\/p>\n

Erin M. Tobin, director of Preservation of the Preservation League of New York State, presented the grant award to Owego Fire Department Chief Daniel Gavin, Village of Owego Trustees Jenny Ceccherelli and Phoebe Morris, and Mark Trabucco, the chair of the Owego Historic Preservation Committee, on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at the Owego Fire Station located at 87 North Ave. in Owego, N.Y.<\/p>\n

The grant supports the cost of a building condition report for the Owego Fire Station, which will be completed by Crawford & Stearns \/ Architects and Preservation Planners, PLCC of Syracuse, N.Y.<\/p>\n

The condition report lays the groundwork for future grant funding opportunities for building repairs and will serve as a guide for the Village to organize and prioritize post-flood repairs and maintenance of the station.<\/p>\n

The Owego Fire Station, in the heart of the Village, dates back to 1911. An architecturally pleasing and prominent landmark rich with history, the impact of the 2011 flood left the building with extensive water damage. Today, the current state of disrepair limits community use, among other factors.<\/p>\n

Ceccherelli explained, \u201cThe Owego Fire Station is one of the most valuable and important buildings in the Village Historic District. The grant represents the first step in a process to preserve an important landmark and regional asset.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Village of Owego extends thanks to the Owego Revitalization & Betterment Corporation for their additional support of $1,000, which will be used to pay toward the $6,000 total cost of the condition report.<\/p>\n

Tobin stated, \u201cWe are delighted to help advance the preservation efforts of the Village of Owego with funding from Preserve New York.\u201d<\/p>\n

In August 2016, the Preserve New York panel selected 26 applicants in 18 counties throughout New York State to share a total of $202,000, which includes the Village of Owego.<\/p>\n

Preserve New York is a grant program of the New York State Council on the Arts and the Preservation League of New York State, and is made possible with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
