Here it is spring, and golf season is starting.\u00a0How sad that we have lost one of the nicest courses in the area.\u00a0Newark Valley Golf Club has closed.\u00a0The only course I know of that was really senior friendly, and reasonably priced.\u00a0Nearly all flat, no water hazards that are so big that a normal person can’t possibly hit the ball over, and not too long to walk without becoming completely exhausted.\u00a0I think people have the idea that in order for something to be any good it has to be new, big and expensive to play.\u00a0I wish Mr. Cleveland luck in his next endeavor (retirement?).\u00a0You will be missed.<\/p>\n

Every year from 2006 to 2012, some two-thirds of U.S. corporations did not pay any federal income tax. Tax incentives, loopholes, corporate inversions, offshore accounts, territorial tax systems in other countries: these are just some of the tools in the tax dodger\u2019s toolbox. Bernie Sanders recently said, \u201cThere is something profoundly wrong in America when one out of five profitable corporations pay nothing in federal income tax.\u201d Average citizens have no creative options to avoid paying taxes, but corporations have influence over legislation and regulation. They often get their way. Bernie Sanders says enough is enough. When corporations don\u2019t pay their fair share of taxes, they weaken our economy and hurt the country. Corporate tax avoidance would be a high priority issue for a Sanders administration.<\/p>\n

Nichols Cemetery, Nichols, N.Y. is having a cleanup day Saturday, April 30 at 9 a.m. Bring rakes, trimmers, etc. Rain date is Saturday, May 7. All winter decorations must be removed before May 1.<\/p>\n

If Donald Trump had 1,237 delegates or is close to that number, he should be a Republican nominee. If the establishment or Republican Party tries to put another nominee or outsider in, people will not vote in the presidential election in November. Doctors in New York State are supposed to be cutting down on prescribing pain medication. I hope our local hospitals cut down on pain medications given to its patients. In the past hospitals gave pain medications to its patients like candy. Why hospitals push pain pills is bottom line, big profits over health safety.<\/p>\n

They get grant money to combat the heroin epidemic and hire somebody to go tell doctors to not give out so many pain medicines. Does that make sense to anybody? The doctors should be telling people, not paying people to tell doctors!<\/p>\n

I have an idea for Memorial Day. I was thinking if anybody would get enough people, come to the Kirby Park in Nichols on the Sunday before Memorial Day and bring a candle balloon, one per family or one balloon for each member of the family, and just as it starts getting dark, light them and send them up and see how many we can get at one time to see how many show up. If anybody would be interested in this I\u2019d appreciate you get a hold of this column and get the Pennysaver to do a story so we can see how many balloons we can send up the day before Memorial Day.<\/p>\n

I am a life long Republican and I believe Donald Trump will embarrass the United States if he were elected president. He doesn\u2019t have a real platform. Now that our new mayor\u2019s in office, perhaps he can schedule work to repair the grade crossing on Talcott Street, which has been in bad repair for a long time. It also might help to put a stop line on Talcott Street before the grade crossing so that people, when they are trying to ingress and egress to North Avenue, don\u2019t have the intersection blocked off by rude drivers.<\/p>\n

I would love to have a presidential contest between Bernie and either Ted or Donald but you Bernie supporters are simply dreaming. The fix is in for Hillary because the democrat establishment elites have super delegates lined up. The republican elites will attempt to dump Donald or Ted but they will not succeed. The only event to stop Hillary would be an indictment, but nobama and his attorney general minion will prevent that unless democrat populism is forcefully apparent. As a taxpayer in the town of Nichols I was just wondering when the town highway department was going to come back and clean up the mess that was made when they trimmed the branches off the trees and the brush along the road. We also wondered when they would come back and open up the sluices so that the water will run down in the ditches and not into driveways.<\/p>\n

The Aqua Aerobics group at the Owego pool on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday would like to thank the school for having such warm water recently in the pool. We understand it is for a youth program but we also appreciate the really warm water and would love to keep it up.<\/p>\n

My concern is the length of red lights in Owego. The one by Mario\u2019s, the one at East Front and the one on North Avenue by the antique store. Those lights have such a long wait period. This is about the ads on TV about emphysema. There is no one in my family that suffers from the disease but I still don\u2019t like them. I work in a dental office and you need to be up front and state you only want a cleaning and nothing else. You might also want to try the Tioga County Dental Van if you live in Tioga County. They offer cleanings and care at a reasonable cost. I know during the summer months they are parked at the Community Center.<\/p>\n
