The New Visions Engineering program at Broome-Tioga BOCES is offering new opportunities to talented local high school students thanks to new partnerships with a growing number of area businesses. More students are taking advantage of the unique training, as this year\u2019s class has reached its maximum number of students.<\/p>\n
The New Visions Engineering program offers an innovative STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) educational experience to high school students by introducing them to the Binghamton community\u2019s engineering opportunities before even entering college.<\/p>\n
The highly competitive New Visions program is designed for those passionate about learning the different aspects of engineering. Throughout the year, students explore the areas of bioengineering, chemical, electrical, mechanical, industrial, aerospace, computer engineering and computer science in a way traditional high school classes do not allow.<\/p>\n
The New Visions Engineering program has grown significantly in the past year with a maxed out enrollment for the 2015-2016 school year. More female students are showing an interest in the STEM fields with an additional five women enrolled this year compared to last year\u2019s class. Applications for fall 2016 enrollment will be available starting this month and must be submitted by March 18.<\/p>\n
More local businesses are throwing their support behind the program, growing from four to ten partner companies with direct ties to New Visions in the past year. Students have rare opportunities to collaborate on projects with mentors at companies such as the Innovative Technologies Complex, BAE, Binghamton University, William H. Lane and Lockheed Martin. Through shadowing opportunities, students can apply what they have learned in the classroom to tangible scenarios in the workplace.<\/p>\n

The students we connect with get to explore possible careers in engineering while learning about future job opportunities right here in New York,\u201d said Mark Lane, President of William H. Lane Incorporated. \u201cWe hope these talented young people will consider staying in the area and contributing to our community after furthering their education.\u201d<\/p>\n
Former New Visions engineering student Meghan Taylor credits the program with confirming her plans to pursue an engineering career.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhile in the New Visions program, I was able to shadow many local professionals in the engineering field. This gave me an amazing opportunity to witness how an engineering degree would benefit me in the real world,\u201d Taylor stated. \u201cI was able to learn alongside professionals in our community, giving me a hands-on experience.\u201d<\/p>\n
Taylor is now majoring in engineering at Roberts Wesleyan College in Rochester, N.Y.<\/p>\n
New Visions is a one-year, honors-level course for highly motivated, academically successful high school seniors. Programs are available through Broome-Tioga BOCES in the fields of Engineering, Health Care, Business and Law and Government.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
