Johnny Carson fans were in for a New Year\u2019s treat this year. On Jan. 1, the Antenna TV Network began broadcasting reruns of the old \u201cTonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe full shows have never been aired since Johnny walked off the air in 1992,\u201d said Sean Compton, president of Strategic Programming and Acquisitions for the Tribune Company, which operates Antenna TV.<\/p>\n

But getting Carson back on Late Night didn\u2019t happen overnight.<\/p>\n

\u201cFirst, I had to convince Jeff Sotzing, president of Carson Entertainment Group that owns the shows, that our network was the right home for Johnny,\u201d said Compton, who re-branded the show as simply \u201cJohnny Carson\u201d to avoid any conflict with the current \u201cTonight Show\u201d on NBC.<\/p>\n

Being a multicast network, Antenna TV programs are delivered to customers through both cable and traditional over-the-air broadcast, reaching some 88 percent of U.S. households \u2013 a strong selling point, according to Compton.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy plan was also to run the show seven nights a week and broadcast the full shows with minor editing that most people won\u2019t even notice,\u201d explained Compton.<\/p>\n

With the Carson company on-board, the next hurdle was to approach the entertainment guilds and unions.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had to work with the American Federation of Musicians, the American Federation of Television & Radio Artists, the Director\u2019s Guild, the Screen Actors and the Writer\u2019s Guilds to make sure everyone was treated fairly and got their royalties. It took a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s because the channel won\u2019t just be running a handful of shows and repeating them over and over.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll be showing 366 unique shows in 2016 \u2013 it\u2019s a leap year!\u201d noted Compton. \u201cI had to watch every show several times and work through all the rights issues for each one.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since most episodes contain a musical guest, each had to be handled individually.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor instance, just the other day we licensed \u2018The Beer Barrel Polka\u2019 for an episode that contained the accordion-playing Polka lady,\u201d said Compton, referring to Vlasta, the so-called Queen of the Polka, who was a popular guest on the show.<\/p>\n

Broadcasts will also be seasonally timed or coordinated with topical current events.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor example, there will be Christmas episodes in December and Valentine\u2019s Day shows in February,\u201d said Compton. \u201cOn March 4, we\u2019ll have the Jim Valvano episode to coincide with the NCAA basketball championship. \u00a0And for the Super Bowl, we\u2019ll have the show with Art Donovan as guest. \u00a0So the schedule is now set for the entire first year.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carson hosted the \u201cTonight Show\u201d for 30 years, beginning in 1962. With the exception of a few clips, most programs from the first decade were not preserved, falling victim to the early frugal production practice of reusing videotapes. \u00a0So only shows from the 1972-1992 years will be aired.<\/p>\n

Among the hundreds of guests to appear during the 2016 season, contemporary stars will include Robin Williams, Martin Short, Chevy Chase, Ellen Degeneres, and Eddie Murphy who will kick off the guest list on the first show (see http:\/\/antennatv.tv<\/a> for schedule).<\/p>\n

\u201cWe also have the classics such as Orson Welles, Jack Lemmon, Buddy Hackett, Elizabeth Taylor and many more,\u201d said Compton, who describes Carson as a one-of-a-kind talk show host. \u201cHe could be funny without the shock value of today\u2019s comedians.\u201d<\/p>\n

Compton also believed that the New Year was an ideal time to begin airing the show.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople are still in a nostalgic mood after Christmas when even 30-year-olds have been listening to music by Burl Ives and Bing Crosby,\u201d he said. \u201cSo for a few minutes each day, they can suspend everything else that\u2019s happening in real time by just looking in the rear view mirror and enjoying some real classic television history.\u201d<\/p>\n
